BC's Mendoza wins ITA "B" Flight title!

September 22, 2009

SUMTER, S.C. — Barton College newcomer Roman Mendoza of France had a sensational debut this weekend in the ITA Tennis Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Mendoza, a junior transfer from Barton Community College (KS) won the Men's B Flight of the ITA tennis tournament at Francis Marion which concluded Sunday. Mendoza — who defeated Bruno Prudence of Wingate (6-2,6-0), Wu Ferraz of Augusta State (6-0,6-0), Braeden Patchell (6-0,6-1), Jan Labas of Augusta State and Drew Owen of Wingate — only lost a total of four games en route to the final.

"We just got Roman cleared (by the NCAA Eligibility Center) earlier in the week," Barton head coach Tom Schrecengost said, "so frankly, I didn't know how good he was — or how good he could be. I put him in the B draw, knowing with the amount of tennis he has played (in his lifetime) that he would be a good player.

"He had a great tournament, and he won quite easily. He just has the kind of game that gives people trouble. He is very clever and has all the shots with different spins. He also mixes it up well. He hit deep shots, lobs and came to the net, which kept them off balance, and he doesn't make many mistakes. We will be much better with him in the lineup. We should have a top four that can compete with most anybody."

On the women's side, Barton junior Jamie Galasso (transfer N.C. Wesleyan) advanced to the round of 16 in the B draw before falling. She defeated Maddy Billeter of Pfeiffer 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64 and Melanie Scheider in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-3 but was taken down 6-1, 6-3 by Sam Alschlager of Wingate in two close sets in the round of 16.

Also winning matches for the Bulldogs in the four day event were junior Cesar Grobel, junior Leandro Peron, sophomore P.A. Desilets, junior Eduardo Stefani, sophomore Lindsay Toth and senior Blair Burke.

August 28, 2009

GREENSBORO, NC - Former Atlantic Christian College/Barton College tennis great Tom Morris, who later led the Bulldogs to great success as a coach, will be inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame.

Morris, of Blount's Creek, and Tom Willson of Cashiers, will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame January 30th, 2010, with a commemoration event held at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst, NC. The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame is housed in Greensboro, N.C.

As an undergraduate at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton), Morris played in the No. 1 spot all four years, earned All-America recognition twice and helped his team win the 1979 NAIA National Championship. He reached the semifinals in the National Singles Championship his sophomore year and ranked as high as #5 nationally in doubles.

His 105 career singles victories still rank as the school record. Morris was named Kiwanis Male Athlete-of-the-Year at Atlantic Christian three-straight years, making him the only athlete to earn that honor more than twice. Morris would return to his alma mater years later as its Head Coach from 1990-98, molding eight All-America selections and eight conference players-of-the-year. He was inducted into the Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.

Currently, Morris is entering his 12th season as head coach at East Carolina. He is the university's all-time winningest tennis coach and has compiled a record of 232-168 at the institution, complementing his 407-270 career collegiate mark.

September 23, 2008

SUMTER, SC — The Barton College tennis teams had a solid performance over the weekend at the Conference Carolinas Fall Individual Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center. It marked their debut under first-year head coach Tom Schrecengost.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Summer Chase won the "C" Flight singles bracket. She beat Jennifer Hawkins of Lees-McRae 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 in the first round; breezed by Mount Olive's Kelly Dunlap 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and rallied past Pfeiffer's Maddy Billeter 6-7, 6-0, 10-4 in the semifinals. Cesar Grobel/Matt Jackman emerged the "A" Flight doubles consolation title. Grobel also bounced back from an early setback to win the "A" Flight consolation draw with a 6-3, 6-4 conquest of Lees-McRae's Steve Karendal.
Other Bulldogs winning matches in the three-day event were: Leandro Peron, Diego Salinas and Ahdai Newsome. Nadia Filmater and Lindsey Toth also represented the Lady Bulldogs.
"I think we got off to a pretty rugged start," Schrecengost said, "but we progressed as the weekend went along. That's what you want to see. We had some players win, or advance to the finals, of their brackets. We've got some work to do. That's undeniable. But we are getting better on a day-to-day basis, and that's what we're trying to do."
All the conference schools except Anderson were represented at the tournament.
Schrecengost believes his team needs to shore up its technique, communication and chemistry in doubles to be successful this season.
"We need to play together more, with different combinations, and try to do some new things," he said. "The talent is there. I think we have good players on both sides (men and women)."

Schrecengost hired to take over tennis programs

June 6, 2008

A new era in the storied history of Barton College tennis is beginning.
Barton College Director of Athletics Gary Hall announced Friday that Tom Schrecengost has been hired to coach the men's and women's tennis teams.
Schrecengost, who was born in Maryland but was raised in Pennsylvania, has 10 years of experience at the NCAA D-II tennis level. He has coached the men's and women's tennis teams at Mars Hill College since 2000 and was the women's coach at fellow Conference Carolinas league member Erskine College the previous two years. He succeeds Brian Mastin, who was at the Barton helm for 1 ½ years.
"I am very excited about getting the job," Schrecengost said Thursday night. "I think it is a unique opportunity, considering the facilities the school has in place and that Barton has a pretty good tradition in tennis (NAIA National Championships in 1979 and 1984, when the school was named Atlantic Christian College). I feel there is also a good base of talent here to work with, so it's a good situation."
He said the people he and his wife of 13 years, Kay, met while on their visit here in late May were "genuine" and that Hall was very accommodating and thorough during their visit.
"I know it is going to be a big challenge, especially with the responsibility we have to the community, but I felt at peace with the decision (to take the job) after praying about it," he said. "We just felt like this was the direction we should go."
Hall was thrilled to quickly conclude a national search that drew 44 applicants…and to secure the search committee's top choice.
"Tom will bring a wealth of experience as a successful NCAA D-II head coach for the past 10 years and also a strong experience working in instructional and tournament settings," Hall said. "He did a tremendous job at Mars Hill of building both the men's and women's teams to a level beyond where they had been when he inherited them in 2000. He demonstrated the ability to balance the need to work hard for both teams, a factor which is very important to us here at Barton. He and his wife, Kay, will be real assets to the college and the Wilson community."
In 2008, Schrecengost directed the Mars Hill men to a No. 6 Southeast Region ranking, a 13-5 overall record and a second-place finish in the South Atlantic Conference. The Lions lost 5-1 to Florida Southern in first round of the NCAA D-II Southeast Regional. His 2004 women's tennis team was ranked as high as No. 9 in the Southeast and his 2006 squad set a school record for wins with 16. From 2004-2007, the Mars Hill women posted a 50-29 win-loss record.
Schrecengost was the President's Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player in 1987 while playing for the Grove City College tennis team. He transferred to the University of South Florida, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education (K-8) in 1991. He earned his Master's Degree of Physical Education in 1997 from Northwestern State University in Louisiana.
His immediate focus as Barton head coach will be to fill out his rosters, plan a practice/playing schedule and prepare to teach some courses in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Studies. They plan to move to Wilson in early July.
"Coach Schrecengost will also work on ways to breathe life back into the tremendous lighted 12-court facility we have on campus," Hall said. "We have changed this position so that it is now a 12-month position, and have done so in large part so that we can expand the number of instructional opportunities we can provide for the local community, as well as have a coach on board who can be an ambassador for the numerous events we have traditionally hosted. It is exciting to anticipate the manner in which Coach Schrecengost will lead us forward in this combination of endeavors."
Schrecengost has been directing a Summer Tennis Camp since 2001 and is looking forward to getting some clinics, camps and private lessons on his calendar in Wilson.
"This (coaching and teaching) is something I've done for a number of years, so that should help me get the job done well," he said. "I should be able to hit the ground running since the two schools I was at before are very similar to Barton.
"I don't like to set specific goals, because that limits you. I think you need to see what's in front of you, work hard, then see where it takes you. As for the community, I want to establish good relationships for lessons and clinics. I want everyone to have fun, because then they'll come back and stay involved with the game."
Schrecengost said his Mars Hill players were "disappointed" that he was leaving. "That's the hardest part," he said, "because you build relationships with the kids, so there is never a good time to leave. But, I think they understood that it was a good opportunity for me and wished me luck."
Hall, who was handling recruiting for the program the last two months, is extremely pleased that Schrecengost will be joining a veteran coaching staff.
"David Riggins, Director of Athletics at Mars Hill, is a close friend and colleague of mine," Hall said, "and he noted that there was no area in which he would rate Coach Schrecengost as anything other than a top-shelf coach and person, so I know he will be greatly missed up there (at Mars Hill)."
"I am just excited because Wilson is a good tennis community that is family oriented," Schrecengost said. "Everyone has been very warm and receptive. From our first visit, we felt pretty comfortable making the move, so we've stepped out in faith."

Brian Mastin to Depart as Tennis Coach at Barton College

April 21, 2008

Brian Mastin, who came to Barton College in January of 2007 to coach the men's and women's tennis teams, has announced that he will not be returning for the 2008-09 academic year.

Mastin has coached the men's tennis team to a combined overall record of 22-20 over the past two seasons. His 2007 men's team was 7-2 in conference regular season play, placing third in the standings, and made the finals of the league tournament, bowing to Anderson University. The 2008 team went 4-5 in league regular season play, placing sixth, and qualified for the league tournament quarterfinals. He coached the women's team to a combined 8-20 mark for the 2007 season and half of the 2008 season. His 2007 women's team was 2-8 in league play, placing in a tie for ninth, and 5-14 overall. That team did not qualify for the league tournament. The women's team was 3-6 under his direction in 2008 before Sheila Milne was named as the team's interim coach in mid-March.

"Barton College appreciates the effort which Brian Mastin gave to his position here over the last year and a half," said Gary Hall, Director of Athletics. "He essentially held four job titles for most of this tenure here, serving as our Strength and Conditioning Specialist and as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Studies in addition to his coaching duties. Under his direction, our 2007 men's tennis team came very close to winning the then Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament championship and advancing into NCAA post-season play. Coach Mastin has been very effective in the strength and conditioning work he performed with student-athletes on a number of our teams. We wish him and his family well as they consider other opportunities."

"We are putting together a job announcement and will begin the search immediately for our next head tennis coach," continued Hall. "With the outstanding tradition of competitive success we have enjoyed in tennis and the top-shelf court facility we have in place, we are encouraged that we can attract a strong pool of candidates for the position. We also will have very good talent returning to both tennis teams and we are confident that we can be successful for the 2008-09 year."
