Barton women run well at Wingate; Free paces men

September 12, 2009

Wingate, N.C.—-The Anderson (S.C.) University cross country teams swept the team titles at the 2009 Wingate University Invitational Saturday morning at the Wingate University cross country facility. The Trojans topped host Wingate by 18 points to win the women's crown, with the Barton women finishing sevneth out of 10 teams. In the men's event, Anderson edged Wingate by a mere two points. Barton fielded just three runners because of injuries, thus did not earn a team score.

The race serves as the pre-regional meet for the 2009 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional that will be hosted by Wingate on Nov. 7.

Women's 6K

Anderson had four runners in the top 10, led by sophomore Whitney Bishoff with her event-winning 6K time of 24:07. Bishoff has good memories of the Wingate course, as she qualified for the NCAA national meet with a third-place finish at the 2008 NCAA Division II Southeast Regional (23:15 6K time).

Bishoff was not a one-woman show, as juniors Lynne Flint (second-place, 25:28) and Chelsea Rogers (eighth, 26:16) and freshman Emily Eckroth (ninth, 26:24) secured spots in the top 10. Freshman Isabel Berry (21st, 28:19) completed the scoring for the AU Trojans.

Wingate senior Brittany Vish (Raleigh, N.C.) made her cross country debut one to remember, as the Sanderson High School product finished fourth with a time of 25:31. The Bulldogs placed five runners in the top 16 to secure second place on the team charts.

On the team leaderboard, Pfeiffer University (81 points), USC Aiken (101) and Catawba College (110) rounded out the top five. Pfeiffer freshman Lindsey Phillips led the Falcons, finishing third with a time of 25:28. USC Aiken had two runners in the top seven. Junior Nicole Maitland led the USCA Pacers with a fifth-place finish (25:39). Catawba senior Maleah Cole paced the Catawba Indians, placing sixth with a 25:47 time.

Barton was paced by freshman Alexa Tovella (Bartlett, IL), who finished 18th in the 71-runner field in a time of 28 minutes. Sophomore Brittany Cowan (Chesterfield, VA) was Barton's second-best runner on the day, clocking in at 31:24 for 41st. Freshman Chrisy Bofill (Raleigh, NC) was 47th in 32:00, freshman Sandy Dickerson took 53rd in33:02; junior Alona Lawson (Ellicott City, MD) was 62nd in 34:33; and senior Amber Fletcher (Navarre, FL) placed 66th in 36:34.

"Alexa was flying around there today," Barton head coach Sheryl Neff said. "She ran well…and she can go faster. She was running on a sore foot. Brittany also had a nice run for us. I thought they all ran well. We beat three teams, so that was a good start. We are looking good…and getting better."

Men's 8K

Anderson had five runners finish in the top 15 to edge Wingate for the team title. Tusculum's ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America® Simon Holzapfel won the men's 8K race with a time of 26:38. The Pioneer junior outdistanced his nearest competitor by a whopping 50 seconds.

Senior Alex Jordan led the AU Trojans, claiming second place with a time of 27:28. Anderson freshman Matt Shaffer claimed seventh place with a time of 28:49. Other finishers for the Trojans include sophomore Jonathan Stephens (13th, 29:37) and freshmen Nigel Reynolds (14th, 29:39) and Alex Pena (15th, 29:43).

Two All-South Atlantic Conference runners led the host Bulldogs Saturday. Senior David Sanctis (Charlotte, N.C.) was sixth with an 8K time of 28:46. Senior Doug Coats (Durham, N.C.) was eighth with a 28:52 clocking. Wingate placed five runners in the top 17 Saturday.

On the team charts, Mount Olive College (72 points), Francis Marion University (123 points) and Pfeiffer University (125 points) claimed the third, fourth and fifth spots.

Sophomore James Maloney led the MOC Trojans with his fourth place finish (28:16). FMU senior Hillary Kiprop was third with a time of 28:16. Pfeiffer senior Matt Tyndall led the Falcons, placing fifth with a time of 28:20.

Freshman Chris Free (Virginia Beach) led Barton with a 36th place finish (out of 72) in 32:37. Teammate Chris Mizzel was close behind in 38th spot in 32:51 and sophomore Phillip Averre (Wake Forest, NC) placed 65th in 37:29.

"I was very pleased with Chris Free and Chris Mizzel for running in the 32s in their first big race at Barton. Phil made a huge improvement, so he was excited as well."

Mount Olive men cruise past BC runners

August 28, 2009

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Kerry "Bear" Maloney finished first out of 23 runners and Mount Olive had the top five finishers as the Trojans defeated Barton in a men's cross country dual meet Friday at Mount Olive College.

The event marked the first-ever intercollegiate cross country event to take place on the MOC campus. Mount Olive totaled the minimum 15 points, while Barton finished with 46 points. Points are based on where each team's top five finishers placed.

Maloney ran the 5k course in a time of 16:27, while Paul Hoffman finished second with a time of 16:48. Both Maloney and Hoffman transferred from Keystone College (Pa.), where they ran for current Trojan head coach Matt van Lierop.

"It feels good to get the season off to this kind of a start," said Maloney, a sophomore from Scranton, Pa. "It helped a lot having people cheering us on. It was a good crowd."

Kevin Ryan finished third with a time of 17:23, four seconds ahead of Ronnie Sturgill, who finished fourth. Reshaad Nelson placed fifth with a time of 17:38.

Sammy Serem was Barton's top finisher in 6th place with a time of 17:53. Chris Free was eighth for the Bulldogs with a time of 18:29. Barton head coach Sheryl Neff said Serem lost some time on the course when he took a wrong turn.

Friday's individual times won't count towards the Conference Carolinas rankings since the official distance for men's races is 8k. But Hoffman says Friday's race will help ease into the 8k races.

"This was a good start. It gets our confidence up," said Hoffman, a sophomore from Lakeview, N.Y. "Running a 5k gives you a good idea where your 8k time should be."

First-year Mount Olive College President Dr. Philip Kerstetter fired the starting gun for both the men's and women's races.

Friday's dual meet was the first of two cross country events to take place on the Mount Olive College campus. The Trojans play host to the Mount Olive Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational October 9. The field is expected to include a number of Conference Carolinas teams.

BC Men's XC picked 11th in league poll

August 25, 2009

High Point, NC — After taking the conference title two years ago, Queens University of Charlotte looks to return to the top of the Conference Carolinas podium for 2009. The Royals have been selected to the No. 1 spot in this year's Men's Cross Country preseason poll as voted on by league head coaches.

The Royals sat out the 2008 conference tournament but dominated the NCAA Southeast Region meet and finished seventh at the NCAA National Championships. The Royals will be led by junior Michael Crouch who took the bronze at the NCAA meet before winning NCAA 5,000- and 1500-meter national titles in the spring. Returning for Queens will be individual region champion Oscar Ogwaro and All-Region runners Futsum Mebrahtu and Matt Rowell. Adding depth for the Royals will be newcomers Edgar Santoyo, Simon Stuetzel, Alex Schilling and Nelson Mwangi."We hope to continue our progression this year," said Coach Scott Simmons, "and with added depth we should be more competitive at the conference, regional and national levels. Across the board on this team, we are seeing solid development from good consistent work."

The Lees-McRae College men's cross country team brings back their top seven runners and looks excited for what the 2009 season will bring. Reigning Freshman of the Year Craig Simpkins, and All-Conference performers Nathan Trimble and Chris Holstein will lead the way for the experienced Bobcat squad. Michael Davis and Jordan Gillespie are also expected to make a significant impact with Sondre Thorbergsen joining the team to add more quality depth for the Bobcats.

New to the Bobcats this year will be Head Coach Thomas Cason. After a brief retirement from coaching he returns with a passion to help continue the tradition of the Lees-McRae College Cross Country program.

"I am thrilled to see what this team can do, with the talent, hard work, dedication, and commitment; to go along with Coach Cason's guidance, this group can attain a lot of goals this fall," Lees-McRae College Athletic Director and assistant coach Craig McPhail said.

St. Andrews Presbyterian College is the defending Conference Carolinas men's cross country champions and will be looking for a large group of veteran runners to fill the vacancy left by two-time Conference Carolinas Runner of the Year, Mitch Cooper, who graduated in May.

The Knights have a veteran team that will consist of seven harriers that are either in their junior or senior campaign. Junior Doug Holt, a two-time All-Conference honoree, will look to pace the Knights scoring five runners. The experience from a cluster of letter winners, along with this year's freshman class, should give St. Andrews the opportunity to be competitive both in league and in the Southeast Region.

"It definitely will be a competitive season, but these guys have put in a lot of miles this summer, building up their base and I feel confident that they will be up for the challenge," said reigning Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year, Jim Walters, who enters his second season at the helm of the St. Andrews cross country program.

Erskine finished fourth in the poll with Anderson fifth followed by Limestone, Coker, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Belmont Abbey, and Barton respectively rounding-out the poll standings.

BC men picked at bottom of pack

August 27, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — The Queens University of Charlotte men's cross country team is excited to continue the success of the historic 2007 season and has been named the preseason favorite by Conference Carolinas coaches.

After capturing the conference title, all three major conference awards (Runner, Coach, & Freshman of the Year) and then moving on to claim the top spot at the regional competition, Queens advanced to its first ever NCAA Championship. The Royals finished 15th, respectively, and earned two All-American awards.

Barton was picked in the 11th and final spot, but has a host of new runners and expects to be much better.
Despite losing top-runners Daniel Kanyaruhuru and Philipe Araujo to graduation, Queens brought in ten new sets of legs to build on the new found success and has been ranked No. 1 in the Southeast region by the USTFCCCA preseason poll. In those 10 new runners Queens has four true freshmen and six transfers. Second-year head coach Scott Simmons said, "Last year was a significant step forward for both Queens and the conference, but we have a lot of work to do to become nationally competitive. We are hoping to continue progressing and to get closer to being one of the best teams in the nation."

Anderson University tied with Lees-McRae in the second spot in the preseason poll. Anderson's men won two meets, finished third in the Conference Carolinas championship meet, and finished in the top three five times last fall. Trojans head coach Randy Greer is looking forward to the upcoming season, "We've been strong one through seven the last couple of years," Greer said. "We're still going to be strong though we may not be as deep as we have been.
Coach Greer considers Nate Parsons, Jeremy Hunsaker, and Alex Jordan as the nucleus of the team. Last season, both Parsons and Hunsaker had two top-10 finishes and Jordan had one top-10. "I think we will be a good team," Greer said. "I think we can be as good as we were last year. We will be younger than we have been in a while."

Lees-McRae College was picked tied for second in this year's poll. There are a lot of new faces in Banner Elk, NC this fall as the Bobcats have eight freshmen and a transfer, to go along with four returnees to give Head Coach Craig McPhail his largest squad in 10 years. "We have some talented young men who have worked really hard over the summer. The development over the next two and a half months will determine a lot," McPhail said. "There is great team chemistry and a desire to be amongst the best teams in the Southeast."
Coach McPhail will look to freshmen Michael Davis, Luke Anton, Craig Simpkins and Cody Hodgins to help with University of Houston transfer Nate Trimble and returnees Chris Holstein, Jon Bernal and Matt Barrett.

St. Andrews finished fourth in the poll with Pfeiffer fifth followed by Erskine, Limestone, Coker, Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive and Barton respectively rounding-out the poll standings.
