SUMTER, S.C. — Barton College newcomer Roman Mendoza of France had a sensational debut this weekend in the ITA Tennis Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Mendoza, a junior transfer from Barton Community College (KS) won the Men's B Flight of the ITA tennis tournament at Francis Marion which concluded Sunday. Mendoza — who defeated Bruno Prudence of Wingate (6-2,6-0), Wu Ferraz of Augusta State (6-0,6-0), Braeden Patchell (6-0,6-1), Jan Labas of Augusta State and Drew Owen of Wingate — only lost a total of four games en route to the final.
"We just got Roman cleared (by the NCAA Eligibility Center) earlier in the week," Barton head coach Tom Schrecengost said, "so frankly, I didn't know how good he was — or how good he could be. I put him in the B draw, knowing with the amount of tennis he has played (in his lifetime) that he would be a good player.
"He had a great tournament, and he won quite easily. He just has the kind of game that gives people trouble. He is very clever and has all the shots with different spins. He also mixes it up well. He hit deep shots, lobs and came to the net, which kept them off balance, and he doesn't make many mistakes. We will be much better with him in the lineup. We should have a top four that can compete with most anybody."
On the women's side, Barton junior Jamie Galasso (transfer N.C. Wesleyan) advanced to the round of 16 in the B draw before falling. She defeated Maddy Billeter of Pfeiffer 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64 and Melanie Scheider in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-3 but was taken down 6-1, 6-3 by Sam Alschlager of Wingate in two close sets in the round of 16.
Also winning matches for the Bulldogs in the four day event were junior Cesar Grobel, junior Leandro Peron, sophomore P.A. Desilets, junior Eduardo Stefani, sophomore Lindsay Toth and senior Blair Burke.

SUMTER, S.C. — Cesar Grobel and Eduardo Stefani of Barton College teamed to win the B flight men's doubles title at the Conference Carolinas Individual Championships last weekend at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
Grobel-Stefani outlasted Lees-McRae's Loveridge-Karendal 8-6 in the final after defeating Cazzaro-Pouchet of Pfeiffer 8-4 in the semifinals.
"The last match, in particular, I thought those guys really worked together, which is what you have to do in doubles to be successful," Barton head coach Tom Schrecengost said.
Stefani also won his consolation bracket in C flight singles by defeating Greg Roberts of Queens University 6-1, 6-2 in the final.
"Hopefully that's going to give him some confidence," Schrecengost said of Stefani's weekend.
Sophomore P.A. Desilets won the C flight men's consolation bracket final 6-4, 7-6 against Gustavo Munoz after knocking off Erskine's Ryan Miller and Bryce Boothby of Queens. Senior Kristen Packer also won her C flight women's consolation bracket, downing Barton teammate Madison Cauley in the semifinals.
Other Barton players to pick up victories in the three-day event at Palmetto Tennis Center were Cauley, Blair Burke, Jamie Galasso, Lindsay Toth, Diego Salinas and Leandro Peron.
The Barton players and Schrecengost will make the three-hour trek back to Sumter again this weekend for the ITA Championships, also at Palmetto Tennis Center.
"The ITA's a whole different ball of wax,"Schrecengost said. "You'll have 30 teams there and that's a good thing. We'll see a lot of players who we wouldn't normally see during the season."

GREENSBORO, NC - Former Atlantic Christian College/Barton College tennis great Tom Morris, who later led the Bulldogs to great success as a coach, will be inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame.
Morris, of Blount's Creek, and Tom Willson of Cashiers, will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame January 30th, 2010, with a commemoration event held at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst, NC. The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame is housed in Greensboro, N.C.
Tom Morris came to North Carolina by way of Columbia, S.C. He enjoyed a sensational prep tennis career, during which he suffered just one loss. As an undergraduate at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton), Morris played in the No. 1 spot all four years, earned All-America recognition twice and helped his team win the 1979 NAIA National Championship. He reached the semifinals in the National Singles Championship his sophomore year and ranked as high as #5 nationally in doubles.
His 105 career singles victories still rank as the school record. Morris was named Kiwanis Male Athlete-of-the-Year at Atlantic Christian three-straight years, making him the only athlete to earn that honor more than twice. Morris would return to his alma mater years later as its Head Coach from 1990-98, molding eight All-America selections and eight conference players-of-the-year. He was inducted into the Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
Currently, Morris is entering his 12th season as head coach at East Carolina. He is the university's all-time winningest tennis coach and has compiled a record of 232-168 at the institution, complementing his 407-270 career collegiate mark.
During his collegiate coaching career, he has been named the Carolinas Conference Coach-of-the-Year four times, as well as awarded the NAIA District 26 Coach-of-the-Year, the Conference USA Sportsmanship Award and NCAA Men's East Regional Coach-of-the-Year. He and wife, Carol, have three children, Chris, Jack and Al.

Four Barton College tennis players were named to Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-Academic team based on their classroom performances from the 2008-09 school year, head coach Tom Schrecengost announced.
Rising senior Will Cobb (3.82 cumulative GPA), sophomore P-A Desilets (3.74) and junior Diego Salinas (3.52) were honored from the Barton men's team while sophomore Lindsay Toth (3.9) excelled academically on the women's side.
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, a player must meet the following criteria: be a varsity letter winner; have a grade-point average of at least 3.5 (on a 4.0 scale) for the current academic year; and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

In the final NCAA D-II Southeast Region rankings by the ITA (International Tennis Association), the Barton College men's tennis team rated 13th and sophomore Cesar Grobel was 20th in singles.
The Bulldogs of first-year head coach Tom Schrecengost advanced to the Conference Carolinas semifinals this season before losing a tight 5-3 match with nationally ranked Lees-McRae. Grobel (Sao Paulo, Brazil) rode shotgun for Barton all season, amassing an impressive 12-2 record at No. 1 singles and posting a 12-5 mark in doubles.
"I told Cesar back in the fall that if he would get closer to the baseline and attack the net more that he could play with anybody," Schrecengost said. "When we lost to Lees-McRae in the semifinals, he was still on the court and beating the 18th-ranked player in the country, so that tells you that he can play with anybody. He's got the ability, so if he plays aggressively, I think the sky's the limit for him."
"I am real excited about the ranking," Grobel said. "My year was pretty good. Coach helped me out a lot. Now, I want to get a national NCAA ranking. I will have to practice hard while I'm home in Brazil and then come back here (to Barton) and do the same."

SUMTER, SC – Barton College swept the doubles, then picked up a pair of victories in singles on Friday to claim a 5-3 conquest of Mount Olive in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament.
The fifth-seeded Bulldogs of first-year head coach Tom Schrecengost improved to 8-9 with the victory and will play top-seeded Lees-McRae at 9 a.m. Saturday for the right to play for the 2009 championship.
Barton battled its way to three doubles victories on Friday against the fourth-seeded Trojans. Cesar Grobel-Chris Martel won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, Leandro Peron/Pier-Alexandre Desilets prevailed 9-8 at No. 2 and Matt Jackman-Diego Salinas won 8-5 at No. 3. Martel, Salinas and Peron were defeated at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles, but Grobel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Jackman rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to seal the win.
Martel lost 6-3, 6-1; Salinas was beaten 6-1, 6-1; and Peron fell 6-2, 6-4.
"Winning those three doubles matches was the reverse of what happened a week ago, when we lost 5-4 to Mount Olive," Schrecengost said. "We just wanted to win at least one of those, so winning all three was big. But, to their (Trojans) credit, they battled back. It was just a good team win for us. I've been coaching tennis a long time, and there haven't been many matches when I've been prouder."
The Trojans pulled within 4-3 by winning three of the first four singles matches to come off the court, but Jackman's rally sealed the deal.
"He beat that guy easily last week," Schrecengost said, "but today was a different story. Matt just seems to love to play three-setters. One thing about him is that he is never going to give up. He's a competitor and he's smart, so he knows how to work his way back into it."
Saturday morning's other semifinal will pit No. 2 seed Anderson vs. No. 3 Limestone. In other matches Friday, Lees-McRae beat Queens, Anderson topped Erskine and Limestone beat Pfeiffer — all by 5-1 counts.
"We've got our hands full with Lees-McRae tomorrow," Schrecengost said of the nationally 20th-ranked Bobcats. "They didn't lose a conference match this season (beat Barton 7-2). But today was a pressure match for us and we pulled through, so there's no reason we can't give them a battle."
