Barton basketball stars Atkinson, Black unite

July 18, 2007

basketballAnthony Atkinson and Tim Black, two of the greatest basketball players in Barton history — and the only two NCAA All-Americans — spent Wednesday afternoon together in Wilson .

In the hallway outside Wilson Gym, the site of many of their exploits, the idea was bantered about that Black, who stars with the Paderborn Baskets in Germany's 1 st League (top level), and Atkinson could form a tenacious backcourt in the German Bundesliga.

“I'd be scared if I saw those two guys on the court together coming at me,” said Mark Pounds, a volunteer assistant coach for the NCAA D-II National Champion Bulldogs.

Black was back in town to help educate Atkinson about professional basketball in Europe . Black will begin his fifth season in Germany in early August. He has starred with the Baskets for three seasons and is in the last year of a two-year contract. The 6-foot, 175-pound point guard averaged 24 points per game in the 2004-05 (28-2) and 2005-06 (30-0) seasons, directing them to an incredible 50 straight wins. This past season, the Baskets, who moved from the 2 nd League to the 1 st League, finished 11 th of 18 teams, but Black missed the first two months of the season with a torn hamstring.

The category winner was the Los Angeles Dodgers, who hit four straight home runs in the ninth inning to tie San Diego, then won in extra innings.

The Bulldogs were nominated for their dramatic rally in the final minute of the 2007 NCAA Division II National Men's Basketball Championship game March 24 th against top-ranked defending national champion Winona State (MN), with a NCAA D-II record 57-game winning streak.
