October 27, 2007

soccer(WILSON, NC) Senior forward Marc Reilley scored with 12 seconds left Saturday afternoon as the visiting the North Greenville men's soccer team spoiled Barton's homecoming, 4-3.

Barton had taken a 3-2 lead in the 74th minute on sophomore forward Carter Ellis' second goal of the day, but Reilley tied it at 3-3 in the 83rd minute. With the clock ticking down and overtime appearing imminent, NGU senior Danny Cobb ripped a 25-yard shot through a pile of players on the muddy, slick field that bounced out of Barton keeper Matt Coble's hands to a waiting Reilley, who ripped the game-winner into the net.

North Greenville rose to 7-8 while Barton finished its first year under the direction of Matt Akins at 5-13-1.

Ellis (Wilson, NC) opened the scoring in the 7th minute, but less than two minutes later, Gabriel Altmayer blasted in shot off a pass from Chris Hecke to tie it at 1-1. Barton claimed a 2-1 lead that held up until the second half when Heinz Guttenberger (Winterville, NC) scored from close range after a Hector Bermudez (Warsaw, NC) shot bounced off the Crusaders' keeper in the 29th minute.

NGU tied the match at 2-2 in the 52nd minute when Brazilian sophomore Max Duarte scored off an Altmayer assist, then Ellis put the Bulldogs up 3-2 on a cross from Fernando Guzman (Mexico City).

North Greenville finished with a 13-12 edge in shots on goal. Senior Cody Gray and Coble (Kernersville, NC) each collected nine saves.

It was the last collegiate match for Coble and forward Jon Anderson (Henderson, NC), who were honored at halftime.

Barton clips Mount Olive 1-0 in rain to secure third place

October 25, 2007

(WILSON, NC) Senior forward Allie Wilkerson (Bowie, MD) scored an unassisted goal just eight minutes into the match Thursday night and Barton College made it hold up in a 1-0 women's soccer conquest of Mount Olive.

The match was played in a steady rain and the players spent much of their time sloshing and falling into mud puddles at the Barton Complex.

The victory lifted the Lady Bulldogs' overall record to 7-5-4. They secured at least third place in the Conference Carolinas standings at 7-2-2 with their fourth straight victory. Barton ends the regular season Saturday at 1 p.m. when North Greenville visits for homecoming. Barton will host a first round Carolinas Conference Tournament match Wednesday at 7 p.m.

Mount Olive slipped to 7-8-3 overall and 5-2-3 in the league and will play a 1 p.m. match Saturday at Limestone.

The Lady Bulldogs managed 10 shots on goal, including five by Wilkerson. Mount Olive had just two shots on goal — both in the first half. Jennifer Sastre tallied nine saves for the Trojans while sophomore Ashley Gregory (Wilson, NC) notched two saves for Barton.

Both teams played a woman down in final 10 minutes after some shoving resulted in a pair of red cards.

Anderson top women's cage team pick; Barton 2nd

October 23, 2007

THOMASVILLE, NC — The Anderson University women's basketball team has been voted the Conference Carolinas coaches preseason poll favorite. After a record setting year in the conference where four teams (Anderson, Barton, Pfeiffer, and St. Andrews) all advanced to the NCAA's 'big dance' last year, things are looking as good as ever for league teams heading into the 2007-08 season.

With 10 returning players, two Division I transfers, and three talented freshmen on the roster, expectations are incredibly high for the Anderson University women's basketball program for the 2007-08 season. The Lady Trojans, 24-8 overall and 15-5 in league play last season, have made four straight trips to the NCAA Division II Tournament and have won at least one game every trip.

"We always have high expectations for our program," said AU head coach Jeff Dow, who is 51-13 in two seasons with the Lady Trojans. "Certainly, you're always trying to build on what you did the year before or maybe the previous years. It's exciting to have 10 returning players and some new recruits who can really make an impact."

The addition of two Division I transfers — 6-foot-2 senior Nikki Anthony from Florida State and 6-0 junior Whitney Ketner from Appalachian State – will have an immediate impact on Anderson's inside game.

"They've got a chance to have a lot of success, and they give us more size than we've ever had," Dow said. "A lot of our success is going to depend on the development of the returning players, especially our guards. Our guards are going to be critical to determine what type of year we have this season."

The Barton College women's basketball team is coming off its third trip in the past four years to the NCAA Tournament and pins down the second spot in the coach's preseason poll. Head coach Wendee Saintsing, in her 19th season, returns four starters and seven others from a team that was the league runner-up at 16-4 and went 21-8 overall. The Lady Bulldogs, who won 11 straight at one point last season and set a school record for points in a game at 105, finally exited in the NCAA Regionals. With the addition of a sensational recruiting class, this should be another banner year for Barton.

Pfeiffer University places in the third position for the second straight year in the preseason coach's poll. New Head Coach Kevin Dobbs hopes to start right where his team left-off last year as the Falcons captured both the league's regular season and tournament championship titles. The Falcons then went on to a first-round game in the NCAA DII National Tournament. They finished the year with a 26-5 overall and 18-2 league record.

Rounding out the ladies' poll 4-10 was: Mount Olive, St. Andrews, Limestone, Belmont Abbey, Lees-McRae, Coker, and Erskine and Queens tied.

CVAC Women's Basketball Preseason Poll (# of First place votes in parenthesis)

1. Anderson College (4) 94
2. Barton College (3) 90
3. Pfeiffer University (4) 89
4. Mount Olive College 67
5. St. Andrews Presbyterian 66
6. Limestone College 49
7. Belmont Abbey College 45
8. Lees-McRae College 38

Mount Olive tops Barton 3-0 on "Breast Cancer Awareness Night"

October 23, 2007

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – Sam Mitchell recorded a match-high 17 kills and became the second player in Mount Olive volleyball history to surpass the career 1,800-kill mark as the Trojans defeated Barton 30-22, 30-19, 30-16 in Conference Carolinas women's volleyball Tuesday at Kornegay Arena. Both teams wore pink jerseys to support the "Passionately Pink For The Cure" program as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

With the win, Mount Olive (15-12 overall, 11-5 Conference Carolinas) is assured of at least a tie for fourth place in the conference standings with four matches remaining. The Trojans led by as many as six points in game one, as Corie Skislak recorded five kills and an ace in the opening game. But Barton (2-25, 1-17) rallied to pull within 22-21, sparked the first of two aces by Brittney Hunsucker. Mount Olive then scored eight of the final nine points to take the first game.

Alicia Mote sparked Mount Olive in game two as the Trojans broke away from a two-point game to take an 18-11 lead. Mote had five of her 11 kills in the second game. Defending National Champion Barton College Tops Men's Basketball Preseason Coaches Poll

October 22, 2007

Thomasville, NC — The Barton College men's basketball team sits atop the Conference Carolinas preseason coaches poll as it begins the defense of its NCAA DII National Basketball Championship. With three returning starters, 12th-year head coach Ron Lievense has added a talented cast of newcomers to what should be another strong team.

The Bulldogs went 31-5 last season, culminated with one of the most exciting finishes in basketball history. Barton, down seven with 45 seconds left in the title game to defending champ Winona State (which was riding a 57-game win streak), rallied behind 10 points in the final 39 seconds from Elite Eight MVP Anthony Atkinson, who scored the game-winning lay-up as time expired.

Lievense must replace Atkinson, forward Mark Friscone and Alejo Barovero, develop some chemistry and ride the wave of a National Championship if the Bulldogs hope to have another successful campaign. Barton will start the season with a 21-game win streak on the line. The Bulldogs are also the 2-time defending conference regular season and tournament champions.

Mount Olive College returns five full- or part-time starters from last year's 23-8 squad, including a young backcourt that grew up in a hurry in 2006-07. The Trojans eclipsed the 20-win mark for the fourth year in a row and made its fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Read more…

Barton golfers storm back to win Tot Hill Tournament

October 21, 2007

golfASHEBORO , N.C. – Junior Jonathan Burke (Goldsboro, NC) and freshman Daniel Castleberry (Clayton, NC) led the Barton College golf team from eight shots back Sunday afternoon to claim the team championship at the Pfeiffer Fall Intercollegiate at Tot Hill Farm.

The Bulldogs fired a second-day total of 287 (+3) for their low four individuals, which was eight shots better than runner-up Mount Olive (295) on day two of the 36-hole event. Barton finished at 305-297–592, Mount Olive claimed second at 301-295–596, Queens was third at 300-306–606, and UNC Pembroke (300-307) and first-round leader Pfeiffer (297-310) tied for fourth at 607.

The Bulldogs, ranked 23rd nationally by Golfstat and 24th in the Nike/Golf World Coaches Poll, got a tournament-low round of 3-under 68 from Castleberry, a 69 from co-medalist Burke, a 73 from sophomore Stephen Harrison (Wilson, NC) and a 77 from freshman Will Vinson (Pikeville, NC) on Sunday. Burke and Vinson are Charles B. Aycock High School graduates.

Burke finished in a deadlock for first place overall at 71-69—140 with Charlotte University 's Blake Stark. The two played the first hole to determine who got the trophy, and Stark prevailed with a par. Charlotte, ranked No. 1 in NCAA D-I, had three individuals playing in the tournament. Burke will get an individual win on Golfstat since Charlotte is D-I, and thus is not compared directly to D-II players.

Charlotte's David Rawluk was third alone at 70-71—141, followed by Castleberry at 74-68—142 and UNC Pembroke individual Ryan Wilson at 72-70—142.

Tot Hill Farm (Par 71, 6,543 yards) was recently named the 7th most difficult course in America by Golf Digest, so 11th -year Barton head coach John Hackney was pleased with the way his team handled the pressure — and the course — during Sunday's charge.

"With a 10-team field that included seven teams from Conference Carolinas, we really wanted to play well this weekend," he said. "We threw away what could have been a good round with a poor back nine on Saturday, so we knew the potential to go low was there. On Sunday, Daniel and Jonathan played extremely well and Stephen bounced back with a better round on Sunday. The guys just made a lot of clutch up-and-downs and played smart. It's nice to finish a solid fall season with a victory since we won't play again until February."

Castleberry made four birdies and just one bogey Sunday while hitting a sensational 17-of-18 fairways and 11-of-13 fairways. He needed just 32 putts and lipped out for an ace on the 15th hole Sunday afternoon. Burke had two birdies and no bogeys on Sunday, when he missed some six putts inside eight feet, including one for eagle on the final regulation hole. He finished the tournament averaging 30.5 putts, 12-of-13 fairways and 14.5 greens.

Harrison carded an 80-73—153, Vinson posted 81-77—158 and senior Joe Elwell (Arrowsic, ME) shot 80-81—161. Playing as individuals, Barton freshman Dustin Chance carded 79-74–153 and junior Marcus Dunning (Bolton, England) shot 78, then withdrew with a wrist injury.

Belmont Abbey (613), St. Andrews Presbyterian College (628) and Lees-McRae (719) also represented Conference Carolinas in the event. Lenoir-Rhyne (608) and Pfeiffer's "B" team (631) rounded out the field.
