Barton holds off Coker at foul line; improves to 3-2

November 29, 2007

HARTSVILLE, S.C. — Defending NCAA D-II National Champion Barton College had its hands full Thursday night in front of a capacity crowd in Timberlake-Lawton Gymnasium, but the Bulldogs buried some key foul shots down the stretch to hold off host Coker 70-63.

Freshman point guard Greg Mammel (San Antonio, TX) scored 17 points on 4-of-7 shooting from 3-point range to power the Bulldogs (3-2 overall, 2-0 in Conference Carolinas) to the victory. Senior 6-6 center Brian Leggett (Alexandria, VA) added 16 points and sophomore guard Aaron Suggs (Wilson, NC) chipped in 10 points.

Barton trailed 37-35 at halftime, but the Bulldogs went 19-of-27 from the foul line in the second half while Coker was just 3-of-10. For the game, Barton was just 24-of-36 from the charity stripe, but outscored the Cobras (10-of-18 for 55.6 percent) by 14 points at the line.

Coker (2-3, 1-1 Conference Carolinas) was behind just four points with 55 seconds left, but a conventional 3-point play by sophomore forward L.J. Dunn (Raleigh, NC) pushed the Barton lead to seven points at :35. J.C. Hafner's 3-pointer closed Coker within 67-63 at :21 before Barton finished off the scoring with a foul shot by Mammel at :21 and two from Leggett with five seconds showing.

Barton only hit 39.2 percent (20-of-51) shots from the floor, but played well defensively, limiting the Cobras to just 5-of-18 (27.8 percent) from beyond the arc.

Coker got 18 points from Mason Ambler and 10 apiece from Ryan Fulwood and Stevie Evans.

Barton, the two-time conference regular-season and tournament champ, entertains Anderson University at 7:30 Saturday night in the "Dog House."

Barton can't convert technicals; falls 78-76 at Wingate

November 26, 2007

Wingate, N.C.—-Wingate University senior guard/forward Sean Barnette (Rock Hill, S.C.) drained a jumper in the lane with 0.7 seconds left to give the eighth-ranked WU Bulldogs a thrilling 78-76 win over the #12 Barton College Bulldogs Monday night in Cuddy Arena. Wingate received a technical foul for storming the court prematurely, but Barton missed the two ensuing foul shots that could have sent the contest into overtime.

The game featured a pair of Elite Eight teams from last year; Barton won the 2007 national championship. With the win, Wingate improves to 2-2 overall on the season. Barton falls to 2-2 overall.

Wingate was led by the 2007 All-American Barnette, who scored 17 of his game-high 25 points in the second half. Sophomore guard Brandon Plummer (Norfolk, Va.) added 10 points for the Bulldogs. Redshirt senior forward/center Bryan Grier (Charlotte, N.C.) had seven points, 10 rebounds, four blocked shots and three steals.

Senior forward Brian Leggett (Alexandria, Va.) led the Barton attack with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore guard Aaron Suggs (Wilson, N.C.) chipped in with 19 points. Freshman guard Greg Mammel (San Antonio, Texas) added 12 points for the visiting BC Bulldogs.

Barton jumped out to an early 19-10 lead in the first half. Wingate stormed back with a 12-0 run to take a 22-19 lead with 8:35 remaining in the half. Senior guard Ernest Mangum (New London, N.C.) scored eight points in the stretch, converting a pair of traditional three-point plays.

Wingate would stretch the lead to five at 29-24 with a lay-up from Plummer. Barton fought back to tie the game at 31 on a trifecta from Suggs. Wingate finished the half on an 8-2 run to take a 39-33 lead into halftime. The first half featured six ties and three lead changes.

The hosts led 54-48 six minutes into the second half, on a three-pointer from Barnette. Barton went on a 9-2 run over the next four minutes to take a one-point lead, taking the lead on a pair of free throws by Jeff Dalce (East Orange, N.J.).

Barton stretched the lead to 67-61 on a three-point play from Leggett with 6:23 remaining. Wingate’s DeMario Mattox (Rocky Mount, Va.) was fouled shooting a three-pointer. Mattox hit all three free throws to cut the lead to 67-64. Back-to-back jumpers from Suggs stretched the lead back to seven with over five minutes left.

A lay-up from Grier, followed by a steal by Plummer and lay-up from Mattox cut the lead back to three at 71-68 with 4:31 remaining. A jumper from Barnette cut the lead to one, Barton responded with a free throw from Leggett for a 72-70 lead. Wingate answered with a put-back from Larry Staley (Charlotte, N.C.) to tie the game with 2:38 left.

Wingate took the lead on a lay-up from Mattox. Leggett hit two free throws on the other end to tie the game again. Barnette responded with another jumper for a two-point lead. Barton again had the answer, with Leggett hitting a driving lay-up with over 32 seconds remaining, tying the game at 76.

After a Wingate timeout, Barnette took the ball at the top of the key, drove into the lane and pulled up for a leaning jumper with a second left. After the ball went through the hoop, the Wingate bench stormed the court, but there was still time on the clock. As a result, a technical foul was assessed to the Wingate bench. Barton sent Errol Frails (Wilson, N.C.) to the line for the two free throws. Frails missed both charity tosses. Barton’s desperation half court heave missed the mark, giving Wingate the 78-76 win.

The Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field, but struggled from long range, hitting only three-of-22 shots from beyond the arc. Barton shot 45 percent from the field, while hitting six-of-18 three point attempts. Barton held a 42-32 advantage on the boards; Barton had 23 turnovers compared to Wingate’s 19. The game had 12 ties and eight lead changes.

Wingate returns to action Friday, November 30, when they host Caldwell (N.J.) College at 8 p.m. Wingate hosts St. Edward’s (Texas) University Saturday, also at 8 p.m. Both games are a part of the 2007 OrthoCarolina Classic.

The Barton Bulldogs return to action Thursday, November 29, when they travel to Coker College for an 8 p.m. Conference Carolinas tip. Barton entertains Wingate on Dec. 8 for a 7:30 p.m. contest in Wilson, N.C.

No. 2 Bentley blitzes No. 8 Barton in second half

November 17, 2007

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. VA — A depleted Barton College men's basketball lineup simply didn't have enough firepower to beat nationally No. 2-ranked Bentley (MA) on Saturday night in the second day of the Clarion Tip-Off Classic at Shepherd University and dropped a 71-46 decision. The loss ended the nation's longest win streak in NCAA D-II at 22 games.

Bentley was 32-1 last season and lost in the first game of the Elite Eight to Winona State, who Barton eventually beat in the NCAA D-II National Championship game to finish at 31-5.

Barton, ranked No. 8 in the preseason, entered the tournament without the services of guard-forwards Mike Flowers and L.J. Dunn, then lost leading scorer Bobby Buffaloe (20 points on 6-of-7 3-point shooting in the opening win over Shepherd Friday night) just three minutes into the Bentley matchup.

Neither team shot well in the first half (34.5 percent for Barton and 32.3 percent for Bentley), but the Falcons flew past the turnover-prone Bulldogs in the second half. Barton hit just 8-of-24 shots (33.3 percent) in the second half while Bentley canned 15-of-26 shots for 57.7 percent. Barton outrebounded the Falcons 38-30, but was victimized by 19 turnovers (Bentley had just seven).

Senior 6-foot-6 center Brian Leggett paced Barton with his second straight double-double. He scored 12 points and pulled a game-high 10 rebounds. Sophomore point guard added 11 points. For Bentley, Nate Fritsch cashed in 19 points, Lew Finnegan scored 13, Jason Westrol 11 and Yusuf Abdul-Ali 10. Bentley had 13 steals, cmpared to none for Barton.

The 1-1 Bulldogs will open their home and Conference Carolinas schedule Tuesday night at 7:30 when St. Andrews Presbyterian College visits Wilson Gymnasium. The National Championship banner will be unfurled during a pre-game ceremony.

Barton comeback falls short vs. Kentucky State

November 17, 2007

RALEIGH, N.C. — The foul-plagued Barton College women's basketball team battled back from a 13-point halftime deficit to take a late lead, but couldn't hold on in a 59-54 setback to Kentucky State Saturday afternoon.

The second straight loss in the Vivian Samson Classic at Shaw University left the Lady Bulldogs 0-2 for the season. Barton opens its home and Conference Carolinas slate on Tuesday night at 5:30 when St. Andrews Presbyterian College visits Wilson Gym.

Barton shot a paltry 26.7 percent (8-of-30) in the first half, compared to a torrid 13-of-22 (59.1 percent) for the Thorobrettes. Some dogged defensive pressure — and better shooting – got Barton back into the game in the second half, when it shot 13-of-28 for 46.4 percent and limited KSU to just 4-of-14 (28.6) while creating many of the victors' 32 turnovers.

Sophomore point guard Esty Flores paced Barton with 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting. She added five assists and three steals. Senior guard Kim Butts, junior guard Candice Britton and junior guard Blair Burke swished eight points apiece.

Bulldogs open title defense with convincing win

November 16, 2007

SHEPHERD, W.Va. — The Barton College men's basketball opened defense of its NCAA D-II National Championship Friday night with a convincing 81-58 over the host in the Shepherd University Invitational.

The Bulldogs (31-5 last season) will play Bentley, preseason No. 2 in most polls, at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon in the second round of the event. Bentley (32-1 last season and returning four starters), knocked off Pfeiffer University 93-83 in the first game of the invitational Friday night.
