Barton claims second seed with 9th straight win

February 29, 2008

WILSON, NC — Juniors Kendra Thomas and Sara Fleming accounted for 47 points and 26 rebounds Friday night as the Barton College women's basketball team defeated archrival Mount Olive, 84-71, in the regular-season finale for both schools.

The win was the ninth straight for the Lady Bulldogs of veteran head coach Wendee Saintsing, and helped them claim second place in the Conference Carolinas standings over Mount Olive. Barton is 18-7 overall and 16-4 in the conference while MOC finished 17-10, 15-5. Barton will entertain 7th-seeded Pfeiffer University on Monday night in the first round of the Conference Carolinas Tournament. If the Barton men beat Mount Olive Saturday, then the women will play at 5:30. If the men fall to MOC, then the BC women will tip off at 7 p.m. Monday.

Friday night's rematch (Mount Olive won the first meeting of the season 99-86), was a well-played affair. Barton was in control for most the game, but could not shake the Lady Trojans. BC led 39-35 at halftime, but MOC rallied to a 41-41 deadlock. The score was knotted again at 43, but Fleming made two jumpers and a layup and Thomas scored down low in an 8-0 run that put the Lady Bulldogs out front for good. Barton's largest lead was 76-60 with 1:37 left.

Thomas was unstoppable in the paint, hitting 9-of-13 shots and 6-of-7 free throws for 24 points. She also hauled down a career-high 20 rebounds. Fleming's mid-range jump-shot on target all night. She canned 10-of-15 shots en route to 23 points and snared six rebounds. Freshman Casey Moore had her court vision in high gear, which was evidenced by 11 points and a career-high nine assists, while point guard Esty Flores netted 10 points.

Barton shot 51 percent from the floor and limited the Lady Trojans to 34 percent. MOC had a slight 48-47 edge in rebounding and outscored Barton 18-6 beyond the arc.

Lakeisha Moore led Mount Olive with 20 points and 10 rebounds; Helen Moore tallied 15 points and 12 rebounds; and Tomeka Pritchard totaled 10 points. The Lady Trojans will be the third seed for the tournament and will entertain sixth-seeded Queens on Monday night.

Knights stun BC men in OT; TV game up next

February 26, 2008

LAURINBURG, N.C.-Senior Bradley Hippolyte (Brooklyn, N.Y.) hit the go-ahead basket with two minutes left in overtime and hit three clutch free throws in the final 33 seconds to lead St. Andrews Presbyterian College to an 81-78 upset victory over No. 8 East Region ranked Barton College on Tuesday night in Harris Court.
Hippolyte scored 20 points to lead the Knights to their biggest victory of the season. SAPC finishes the 2007/08 season with a 7-20 overall record and a 6-14 mark in Conference Carolinas play. The top eight teams in the league make the conference tournament this year and SAPC will finish one game out in ninth place.
Bulldogs junior Bobby Buffalo (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half and overtime to keep the 2007 NCAA Division II national champions in the game late. Barton maintains a 17-9 overall and 13-6 league ledger heading into their regular-season finale against No. 17 nationally Mount Olive College. The Bulldogs host the Trojans in Wilson, N.C., on national TV Saturday afternoon at Noon. The game will be broadcast on CSTV and FoxSports South.
"What a great way for our seniors to finish their collegiate careers by defeating the defending national champions in overtime," said St. Andrews third year head coach Billy Lee. "It was great to see our hard work pay off. We have been knocking on the door all season and its great to close the season with two good wins heading into next year."
The largest lead of the game was held by Barton on three separate occasions in the first half including a 35-27 advantage at halftime. Junior Errol Frails helped the Bulldogs take an eight-point lead into the locker room scoring 12 of his 19 points in the first 20 minutes.
The Knights quickly bounced back and tied the game for the eighth time just four minutes into the second half on a lay-up by Hippolyte.
A two-point basket by sophomore L.J. Dunn (Raleigh, N.C.) gave the visitors a five-point lead (64-59) in the final two and half minutes of regulation but St. Andrews never quit and went on a 7-0 run to take a two-point lead in the final minute. Hippolyte had another lay-up followed by a three-pointer by junior Joseph Gripper (Charlotte, N.C.) to tie the game. On the ensuing Knights possession, sophomore Ron Deas (Clayton, N.C.) had a clutch put-back on a missed three-pointer to give SAPC its first lead in six minutes.
Knights' junior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) made three of four free throws in between a Buffalo hoop to give the hosts a three-point advantage in the final 20 seconds. After a Buffalo made free throw, freshman teammate Greg Mammel (San Antonio, Texas) corralled an offensive rebound on a missed second free throw by Buffalo. SAPC was whistled for another foul with 6.4 seconds on the clock and Frails drilled both freebees to tie at 69-69 and force overtime.
In the five-minute extra period, Buffalo hit a three pointer with three minutes left to tie the game at 74-74. However, the Knights defense held Barton without a field goal in the final three minutes while the Knights offense scored seven more points to hold on for the three-point victory. Mammel, who had 10 points including two 3-pointers, missed a potential game-tying three-pointer to force a second overtime.
St. Andrews rallied from the eight-point halftime deficit by shooting 60.0-percent in the second half and 48.4% for the game. The Bulldogs, who only made two shots in overtime, shot 42.9% from the floor.
The Knights had assists on more than half of their made shots. Lee added, "We shot the ball extremely well because we passed it well. We seemed to have an urgency to find the open man, who finished plays for us tonight. Barton is the best defensive team in the league and it was of the upmost importance to move the ball."
Senior Brian Leggett (Alexandria, Va.) grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to help the bigger Barton team win the battle of the boards, 46-34. Leggett just missed a double-double with eight points.
Along with their hot shooting, the Knights also protected the ball well against a physical Bulldogs team by committing just 11 turnovers.
Hippolyte scored his 20 points on 8-of-14 shooting while sophomore Colby Poe (Bennettsville, S.C.) scored 16 points including four 3-pointers. Junior Charles Phillips (Decatur, Ga.) scored all 11 of his points in the second half while freshman Zack Garst (Huntersville, N.C.) scored nine of his 11 after halftime. Deas was the fifth Knight in double-digits with 10 points.
Gripper had a team-high eight rebounds for the Knights while Hippolyte pulled down seven. Hippolyte flirted with a triple-double with a game-high seven assists.
Buffalo led all players with 23 points while Frails scored 12 of his 19 points on four 3-pointers. Dunn and Mammel followed with 10 points apiece. Junior David King (Raleigh, N.C.) chipped in with eight rebounds.
"Ron Lievense [Barton College Head Coach] is an outstanding coach and his teams played hard but it was our turn to win," concluded Lee.

Bulldogs baseball upsets #9 Francis Marion!

February 20, 2008

FLORENCE, SC - Senior third baseman Travis Holloman belted a go-ahead two-run homer and junior center fielder Zach Boyette went 5-for-5 to lead Barton College to a 7-5 upset of ninth-ranked Francis Marion University, Wednesday afternoon (Feb. 20) in college baseball action.

Barton edges above the .500 mark at 7-6, while Francis Marion (11-2) sees its nine-game winning streak stopped.

FMU senior right-hander Ed Paul (1-1) surrendered his first runs of the season and was tagged with the loss. Barton starter Brent Godwin (2-0) got the win, while Nick Nigito got the final three outs to earn his second save of 2008.

Holloman finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs batted in, while Boyette had four singles and a double and drove in two runs. Barrett Martin and Brandon Sneed both had two hits apiece for Barton.

FMU senior shortstop Greg Phelps was 2-for-5, including a two-run homer, to extend his hitting streak to 21 games. Senior center fielder Justin Greene and junior third baseman Keon Graves were both 3-for-4. Jared Barkdoll, Tyler Lehman, and Vince Farfaglia also had two hits in the losing cause.

Both teams scored once in the first inning. The Patriots loaded the bases with no outs, but could only manage one run and that scored on a double-play grounder. Barton scored three times in the second. Holloman had a run-scoring double and Boyette a two-run double. Francis Marion matched those three tallies in the third, thanks to Phelps' homer and a second run-scoring double play grounder off the bat of freshman Preston Shuey.

Holloman's two-run homer in the fourth put Barton ahead for good. FMU scratched its final run in the eighth on a single by Graves, but the Patriots left the tying runs on base in both the eighth and ninth frames.

FMU will open its Peach Belt Conference schedule this weekend with a three-game series at UNC Pembroke, beginning with a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m. Barton hosts Belmont Abbey College for a twinbill on Saturday starting at noon.
