WILSON, NC - Host Barton College fired a 3-over par 291 on Tuesday to win the 2 Targets/Barton College Intercollegiate Golf Tournament at the Wilson Country Club.
The Bulldogs' 295-291-586 beat runner-up and defending champion Cape Fear Community College (300-296–596) by 10 shots. Mount Olive College (300-307-607) was third, followed by Pfeiffer at 300-308-608 and Queens University of Charlotte (304-306-610). The field included 11 teams and 23 players competing as individuals.
Atlantic Coast Conference schools Duke, North Carolina and N.C. State were represented in the field by 13 players. UNC junior Chase McFarland (71-68) and Barton junior Jonathan Burke (69-70) finished tied for first place at 5-under 139, but McFarland won the medalist plaque with a birdie on the first playoff hole. He sank a 12-foot putt, then Burke's birdie attempt on the par-4, No. 1 layout from nine feet ran over the edge of the cup. Burke and McFarland set the all-time 36-hole scoring record in the 33-year-old tournament. Only four players had broken par for two days in the previous history of the event. Five players broke par this year under ideal playing conditions (60 degrees and lift, clean and place because of wet grounds.)
Cape Fear CC's Matt Lawson fired 73-69-142 to tie for third place with Duke's Chance Pipitone (69-73–142). Duke's Justin Hare shot 69-74-143 to round out the top five. Freshman Daniel Castleberry was T10 at 74-72-146, sophomore Stephen Harrison tied for 16th at 76-74-150 and senior Neal Jones was T19 at 77-75-152. Barton's lineup was rounded out by senior Joe Elwell, who shot 76-88-164.
The Bulldogs, ranked 25th nationally in the latest Nike/Golf World D-II Coaches Poll, have won two tournament titles this season. They also prevailed in the Tot Hill Farm/Pfeiffer Invitational in the fall. The Bulldogs will next compete in East Carolina's Tournament at Ironwood Country Club on April 3-4-5 (18 holes each day).
