In the NCAA's Champion magazine, Barton College's fantastic comeback from seven points down with 45 seconds left in the 2007 NCAA D-II Men's Basketball final was ranked as the No. 2 most dramatic finish in the history of NCAA Championships in all sports!
Led by senior All-America point guard Anthony Atkinson, who scored all 10 Bulldog points in the last 39 seconds — including a buzzer-beating layup after a Bobby Buffaloe steal — Barton rallied to beat defending NCAA champ Winona State 77-75. The No. 1-ranked Warriors were riding an NCAA record 57-game win streak and were unbeaten.
Game personnel had already taken the championship shirts and hats to the Winona State bench in the final minute when Atkinson and his army of Bulldogs went to war, battling their way quickly back into contention. Atkinson made a spinning layup, a pull-up jumper from 12 feet, a hanging short jumper in traffic after an Errol Frails steal and an incredible reverse layup in traffic to pull the Bulldogs even at 75-all. Then, on the game's final play, Winona State's All-America guard Zach Malvik raced down the floor in hopes of cashing in the winning basket. Instead, Buffaloe pulled off the back-tip steal just past midcourt and flipped it back to Atkinson, who quickly glanced at the clock to see just over two seconds left, then sprinted for the hoop and laid in the championship-clinching basket as the buzzer sounded.
With hands clasped over his head in disbelief and screaming for joy, Atkinson ran around the basketball standard, then down the floor with his teammates in hot pursuit. It is a scene that will live in the minds of sports fans forever…and one that has now been immortalized as the No. 2 storybook finish of all-time by the NCAA.

Ike Onyeador, who in the past year has served as the assistant coach for both the men's and women's soccer teams at Barton College, has accepted a position as a graduate assistant men's soccer coach at Union College in Barbourville, KY. Onyeador will pursue a master's degree in either Education or Psychology in his new position and serve under Head Men's Soccer Coach Tyler Brock. The Union College Bulldogs compete at the NAIA level and he will officially begin work on August 1.
Onyeador has had a wealth of soccer experiences at Barton and in the Wilson community since arriving to play for then Barton Men's Head Coach Gary Hall in 2001. Onyeador, a Virginia State Olympic Development Program player from Potomac Falls High School won the position as the starting goalkeeper for the Bulldogs in his freshmen year and had a career 1.56 goals against average in that role. Shoulder injuries caused Onyeador to serve as a field player in his later seasons and he served as a team captain as a senior in 2005, and also led that season's team in assists. He was selected for the team's Mike Smith Award in 2003, presented to the Barton player best exuding courage and commitment. He was named to Who's Who for Barton College for the 2005-06 academic year. Onyeador has served the past several years as an instructor for the Barton College Soccer Camp. Onyeador served as an assistant coach to Hall for the 2006-07 year and then for 2007-08 as assistant coach for new coaches Matt Akins and Michael Michalakis for the Barton men's and women's teams, respectively. In addition to his duties at Barton, Onyeador has coached extensively with local schools and with select soccer in Wilson. He has coached the boys soccer team at Community Christian School for the past two years, has served as a JV and assistant coach at Fike High School, and as a middle school coach for the Edgecombe County Schools. Onyeador has coached several teams for the Wilson Youth Soccer Association (WYSA), has served as Assistant Director of Coaching for this organization, and has served on its Board of Directors.
"I am extremely pleased that Ike has landed this position at Union College," stated Hall, who now serves only as Director of Athletics at Barton College. "Union has a strong soccer program and the ability to combine this experience with attaining a master's degree is a great opportunity. As Ike and I have discussed where the future will take him in the college game, I have urged him that getting an advanced degree to pair with his experience in soccer would open a number of doors for him. In the very near future he will become an excellent head coach at the college level."
"Ike has become a soccer fixture in the local community," continued Hall. "He brings the same endless enthusiasm to coaching that he did to playing the game. Ike certainly has made a tremendous impact in the program at Barton. Whatever we needed done, particularly when it came to the wealth of local clinics and camps we held over the past several years, Ike has been a centerpiece of such activities. His dynamic personality has made him an icon with children at camps and clinics. Our leadership in WYSA will miss his coaching and service on our board greatly. He put 100% into everything he did for soccer in our community."

Brian Mastin, who came to Barton College in January of 2007 to coach the men's and women's tennis teams, has announced that he will not be returning for the 2008-09 academic year.
Mastin has coached the men's tennis team to a combined overall record of 22-20 over the past two seasons. His 2007 men's team was 7-2 in conference regular season play, placing third in the standings, and made the finals of the league tournament, bowing to Anderson University. The 2008 team went 4-5 in league regular season play, placing sixth, and qualified for the league tournament quarterfinals. He coached the women's team to a combined 8-20 mark for the 2007 season and half of the 2008 season. His 2007 women's team was 2-8 in league play, placing in a tie for ninth, and 5-14 overall. That team did not qualify for the league tournament. The women's team was 3-6 under his direction in 2008 before Sheila Milne was named as the team's interim coach in mid-March.
"Barton College appreciates the effort which Brian Mastin gave to his position here over the last year and a half," said Gary Hall, Director of Athletics. "He essentially held four job titles for most of this tenure here, serving as our Strength and Conditioning Specialist and as a faculty member in the Department of Physical Education and Sports Studies in addition to his coaching duties. Under his direction, our 2007 men's tennis team came very close to winning the then Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament championship and advancing into NCAA post-season play. Coach Mastin has been very effective in the strength and conditioning work he performed with student-athletes on a number of our teams. We wish him and his family well as they consider other opportunities."
"We are putting together a job announcement and will begin the search immediately for our next head tennis coach," continued Hall. "With the outstanding tradition of competitive success we have enjoyed in tennis and the top-shelf court facility we have in place, we are encouraged that we can attract a strong pool of candidates for the position. We also will have very good talent returning to both tennis teams and we are confident that we can be successful for the 2008-09 year."
