OWENS CROSS ROADS, Ala. - The first, second, third and honorable mention PING All-America Teams have been announced by the Golf Coaches Association of America, and Barton freshman Daniel Castleberry, the Atlantic Region medalist, was named to the Honorable Mention squad.
Castleberry, who helped Clayton to a N.C. High School Athletic Association championship during his prep years, fired a 1-over par 217 to win the NCAA D-II Atlantic Region title by one shot on May 7 at The Point Lake & Golf Club at Lake Norman. He registered four top-10 finishes in 11 events and averaged 74.5 for the season, including 73.3 in his last six tournaments. He led all D-II golfers in driving accuracy, hitting 72.3 percent of the fairways. He hit 60 percent of greens in regulation and averaged 30.7 putts. He will receive an award from Golfstat for winning the driving accuracy title.
Winning the regional title made Castleberry an automatic All-American, but did not qualify him for Nationals (as was the case in previous years) because only the Super Regional champ not on an advancing team moved on to the pinnacle event in Houston this season. That honor went to Carson-Newman's Brad Robinson.
Castleberry is the sixth All-American coached by Barton's John Hackney, who just completed his 11th season. He joins Courtney Faircloth (twice), Jon Wetton (twice) and Josh Talton on that elite list of D-II All-Americans.
"Daniel had an excellent start to his career with the Bulldogs," Hackney said. "He is just very steady off the tee, and when his putter is hot, he's a contender to win any tournament. I am looking for great things from him over the next three years. The best thing about Daniel is that he is fine young man of great character. I am proud to have him representing Barton College as a student-athlete."
Castleberry was the only player from Conference Carolinas to make the 2007-08 All-America team. Barton was ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, but missed a trip to Nationals by three strokes. According to Golfstat, the Bulldogs finished 2nd nationally in driving accuracy (.657), third in putts on greens in regulation (1.909), fourth in total short game (.505) and fifth in greens in regulation (.562) this season.
Jude Eustaquio of Florida Southern, National Champion Jeff Goff of USC-Aiken, CSU-Stanislaus Erick Justesen, Tobias Rosendahl and Kyle Scott of West Florida, Sonoma State's Jarin Todd, Will Wilcox of Clayton State, Valdosta State's Brent Witcher and Chris Wolfe of Armstrong Atlantic State were named to the PING All-America First Team.
Roberto Diaz of USC-Aiken, West Florida's Matthew Galloway, Andrew Georgiou of Columbus State, Indianapolis' Justin Hueber, Niclas Johansson of Georgia College, Western Washington's Jake Koppenberg, Colby Shrum of Central Oklahoma and Central Missouri's Justin Yoder were named to the second team.
Third-team selections include Henderson State's Jack Bartlett, Matt Ewald of Washburn, St. Edward's Jeff Howard and Colin Mayer, Greg O'Mahony and Constantin Schwierz of Nova Southeastern, Western Washington's Sean Packer and Peter Svajlen of Cameron.
A total of 28 golfers were named to the honorable mention All-America team.

Boyette, who missed 15 games with an injury, led the Conference Carolinas in hitting at .441 and ranked 30th nationally among NCAA D-II players. He was the team's shortstop last season, but moved to the outfield this year. He was the top hitter for the 27-28 Bulldogs, who played 23 of their 55 games against teams ranked in the top 30. He also led Barton in slugging percentage (.607) and on-base percentage (.494). He posted a .967 fielding percentage and had 64 hits, including nine doubles, three triples and three home runs. Mount Olive, the regular-season and tournament champ in Conference Carolinas this season, placed seven players on the All-Region team, while league runner-up Erskine had five players selected. Fourteen of the 31 players on the two teams were from Conference Carolinas schools. Mount Olive is currently playing in the NCAA D-II World Series.

NORMAN, OK — Barton College junior Jonathan Burke (Goldsboro, NC) and freshman Daniel Castleberry (Clayton, NC) were named to the 2007-08 Golf Coaches Association of America/PING All-Atlantic Region team.
Burke, the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference (CVAC) medalist in 2007, was the 2008 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year after averaging 73.8 in 11 tournaments, two of which he was awarded a Golfstat victory. Castleberry also played in every event for the Bulldogs, averaging 74.52 on his way to winning the Atlantic Region title with a three-day, 54-hole total of 77-70-70–217 (+1).
Barton was ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region most of the season, but was edged by Belmont Abbey in the Conference Carolinas Championships, then missed a berth to the NCAA D-II Nationals by three shots.
Burke and Castleberry were two of seven Conference Carolinas players named to the 10-player All-Atlantic Region squad. Belmont Abbey was represented by senior Matt Chidester, sophomore Connor Tomlinson and freshman Peter Tarver Jones. Anderson University junior Adam Sheriff and Queens University of Charlotte senior Iain Hall also made the team. Representing the CIAA on the squad were Ian Milne and Chip Lynn of Fayetteville State and Jerel Whiting of Virginia State.
In his 11 seasons at the Barton helm, head coach John Hackney has coached 23 All-Conference players, 16 All-Region players, six All-Americans, one Freshman All-American and seven All-America Scholars. The Bulldogs have won 32 tournament titles and captured 24 medalist awards. Eight of Hackney's teams have been ranked in the top 25 nationally (two rose into the top 10) and the Bulldogs have now played in nine consecutive NCAA Regionals.

Barton College held its annual athletics ceremony Thursday afternoon, recognizing student-athletes in every sport for their athletic and academic successes achieved over the 2007-08 season.
The event, held on campus at Hardy Alumni Hall, is something Barton takes pride in. Unlike many schools, Barton is able to recognize all of its athletes at once.
"To our credit, it's nice that we can hold this event and recognize all of the teams in the same event," Gary Hall, Barton's director of athletics, said after wrapping up the ceremony for the 19th time.
"It's a great tradition that we have here and we did it in under two hours, which is a minor miracle," Hall joked. "It's a great day for us to be Bulldogs and share our recognition in events together."
Most Valuable Players were selected in each sport and other athletes were recognized for various achievements in their respective sports, such as sportsmanship, most improved and defensive excellence.
Junior golfer Jonathan Burke and freshman softball player Jessica McFadden were tabbed the Kiwanis Athletes of the Year. Burke joined Courtney Faircloth as the only golfers to earn the distinction. McFadden's selection was also special since few players have been chosen in their first year.
"Jessica and Jonathan both had extraordinary years of competition here and they were both excellent choices," praised Hall. "We had others who would have also been excellent choices, but these two represent us very well."
Burke was saluted as the Conference Carolinas Player of the Month three out of five possible times, won two individual titles and was named conference Player of the Year. Still, he genuinely did not expect to receive the honor.
"I was surprised to be honest with you," he said. "Golf isn't one of those sports you think about for this. So I was very, very surprised but also very honored. I thought (men's basketball player) Brian Leggett was going to win it."
McFadden, the team's center fielder, was also taken aback by the news despite posting a .388 average, 59 hits, 38 runs and 36 stolen bases — all team highs.
"I achieved a lot, but I did not think I was going to get this — I'm very shocked," she said. "I hope this can show the team next year that we can achieve much more and maybe we'll have more awards. I tried to have a good year with my offense and defense and just the simple things, but not to achieve this. It's a huge bonus and I can't wait for next year."
Leggett, a senior, was named team MVP, the top rebounder and the sportsmanship award-winner for the men after averaging 11.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. Sara Fleming, a redshirt junior, was named MVP of the women's team. Fleming started all 27 games and averaged 12.1 points and scored 20-plus points six times.
Allie Wilkerson, the Conference Carolinas Player of the Year, was named MVP of the women's soccer team and Travis Holloman, one of the program's all-time bests, was tabbed baseball MVP. William Stakes, a freshman from Greenfield, garnered Most Improved for men's soccer (no MVP was selected).
Others honored were recently departed tennis coach Brian Mastin, registrar and interim women's tennis coach Sheila Milne, women's basketball coach Wendee Saintsing (300 wins) and longtime athletic trainer Randy Pridgen (20 years of service).
Other most valuable players were: Travis Holloman, baseball; Allie Wilkerson, women's soccer; Jessica Galasso, women's tennis; Scott Reddick, men's tennis; Michelle Walker, volleyball; and Gina Castro, women's cross country.
Grabbing the other major awards were: softball player Jayme Beacham, Edward L. Cloyd Scholarship Award given to the four-year student-athlete with the highest GPA through seven semesters; baseball player Brandon Sneed, Ernest Brewer Memorial Scholarship Award given to the non-senior student-athlete best combining academic and athletic performance; Sara Fleming, Ned Liggon Memorial Scholarship Award given to the non-senior student-athlete from North Carolina best combining academic and athletic performance, as well as contributions to student life. Senior baseball player John Miller was also recognized for being Barton's nominee for the prestigious Murphy Osborne award given to the conference's top student-athlete.

MOORESVILLE, NC- Belmont Abbey College and Georgia College and State won their respective regionals Wednesday to earn automatic bids to the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championships in Houston, Texas next week after completing three rounds of the NCAA Atlantic/Southeast Super Regionals at The Point Lake and Golf Club.
Both schools led their regions wire-to-wire, as the Abbey won the Atlantic Region by 15 shots over Barton, while GCSU won the Southeast by 13 strokes. Also advancing to the nationals are Newberry, South Carolina Aiken and Clayton State, as they qualify for having the three lowest scores after the regional winners. Brad Robinson of Carson Newman qualified for the nationals as an individual, which is awarded to the lowest scoring individual from a team not advancing to the National Championships.
Barton freshman Daniel Castleberry turned in one of just two rounds under par Wednesday to claim the Atlantic Region individual title with a 77-70-70–217 (+1) by one shot over Belmont Abbey sophomore Connor Tomlinson. In previous years, the regional individual champs earned automatic bids to the Nationals, but the format was changed this year to give only an individual berth to the top player in the Super Region (Atlantic/Southeast) not on an advancing team. Castleberry finished fifth overall in the Super Region and was third in the at-large race among players not on advancing teams. Carson-Newman's Brad Robinson moved on to Nationals with a -3 score, followed by Armstrong Atlantic's Chris Wolfe at -2. The best score in the 54-hole event was turned in Niclas Johansson, who led Georgia College & State University to the Southeast Regional crown with a 5-under 211, including a tourney-best 69 Wednesday.
Georgia College and State posted a three-day score of 872 (+8), winning by 13 shots over South Carolina Aiken. South Carolina Aiken was second with a 21 over par 285, while Newberry finished third with a 27 over par 891. Newberry advanced to the National Championships for the first time in school history.
Clayton State finished fourth and qualified for the nationals by one shot over Lander. The Lakers posted a 37 over par 901 and had to wait in the clubhouse for more than an hour while Lander and Barton finished their rounds. Barton, ranked No. 1 in the Atlantic Region, was seven shots ahead of Clayton State and three ahead of Lander in the battle for the fifth and final spot to Nationals with three holes left, but the Bulldogs played holes 16, 17 and 18 10-over par, and thus relinquished the at-large berth to Clayton State.
Belmont Abbey, sixth at the 2007 Nationals, claimed the Atlantic title for the second-straight year with a 25-over par 889. Barton fired a 307-292-305–904. Anderson was third with a 45 over par 909, while Mount Olive was fourth at 917. The Atlantic Region posted the only hole-in-one of the tournament, as Marc Kourie aced the par three 15th.
Barton sophomore Stephen Harrison, playing in a brace with a torn ACL for the second straight tournament, fired rounds of 76-76-74–226 to tie for 10th place while Conference Carolinas Player of the Year Jonathan Burke finished one shot back at 74-76-77–227 to tie for 13th. Seniors Neal Jones (80-70-85–235) and Joe Elwell (82-77-84–243) finished 24th and 37th, respectively in their last tournament as Bulldogs.
