Barton women's soccer tapped 5th

August 28, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — The Belmont Abbey College women's soccer team has been picked to lead Conference Carolinas for the third-straight year in the preseason Coaches Poll. Barton, which was 8-5-5 last season and 7-2-2 (third) in the conference, was picked fifth.

The Abbey has won the conference title two out of the last three seasons, and returns 13 players from last year's team that allowed just one goal en route to a perfect 11-0-0 mark in Conference play. The Abbey ended up shutting out every conference opponent last year after defeating Limestone 2-0 in the conference semifinals. Limestone scored the only goal the Abbey allowed in conference play with 11 seconds remaining in a 4-1 win. The Abbey set conference records for shutouts (10) and fewest goals allowed (one). The Crusaders ended up with 16 shutouts and an 18-4-1 overall record.
Belmont Abbey will return six of their eight all-conference selections, including defenders Danielle Kubinski, Amanda Maddock and Kristin Voirin and forwards Celene Molera and Lindsay Palm and goalkeeper Anna Wells.

The Pfeiffer University women's soccer team comes in at number two in this year's preseason poll as voted on by league head coaches after finishing second in the league last year with a 8-2-1 league record and 10-7-4 overall mark. Pfeiffer's six seniors of Kirsten Bartsch, Madison Kerth, Julia Barker, Shannon Davis, Angela Reale, and Katie Franca are ready and hope to lead this team to its best season ever. On Monday, September 1st, Pfeiffer opens their season at home in a regional match-up against UNC Pembroke.

The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team is coming off what could arguably be the best season in program history winning the conference tournament title and advancing to its first ever NCAA Tournament, and according to head coach Katie Talbert has no plans of slowing down, "The players have the ability to win back-to-back tournament championships as well as compete in the region and national spotlight."
The Royals will rely on senior leadership in forward Kari Byzewski, midfielders Erin Saleeby, and defenders Mary-Ashley Davino and Whitney Henson to guide the underclassmen, including 11 freshmen, to a season of success. In total, the Royals have 13 players returning including leading-scorer Byzewski and both goalkeepers, Kristen Kornacki and Michelle Landry.

BC men picked at bottom of pack

August 27, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — The Queens University of Charlotte men's cross country team is excited to continue the success of the historic 2007 season and has been named the preseason favorite by Conference Carolinas coaches.

After capturing the conference title, all three major conference awards (Runner, Coach, & Freshman of the Year) and then moving on to claim the top spot at the regional competition, Queens advanced to its first ever NCAA Championship. The Royals finished 15th, respectively, and earned two All-American awards.

Barton was picked in the 11th and final spot, but has a host of new runners and expects to be much better.
Despite losing top-runners Daniel Kanyaruhuru and Philipe Araujo to graduation, Queens brought in ten new sets of legs to build on the new found success and has been ranked No. 1 in the Southeast region by the USTFCCCA preseason poll. In those 10 new runners Queens has four true freshmen and six transfers. Second-year head coach Scott Simmons said, "Last year was a significant step forward for both Queens and the conference, but we have a lot of work to do to become nationally competitive. We are hoping to continue progressing and to get closer to being one of the best teams in the nation."

Anderson University tied with Lees-McRae in the second spot in the preseason poll. Anderson's men won two meets, finished third in the Conference Carolinas championship meet, and finished in the top three five times last fall. Trojans head coach Randy Greer is looking forward to the upcoming season, "We've been strong one through seven the last couple of years," Greer said. "We're still going to be strong though we may not be as deep as we have been.
Coach Greer considers Nate Parsons, Jeremy Hunsaker, and Alex Jordan as the nucleus of the team. Last season, both Parsons and Hunsaker had two top-10 finishes and Jordan had one top-10. "I think we will be a good team," Greer said. "I think we can be as good as we were last year. We will be younger than we have been in a while."

Lees-McRae College was picked tied for second in this year's poll. There are a lot of new faces in Banner Elk, NC this fall as the Bobcats have eight freshmen and a transfer, to go along with four returnees to give Head Coach Craig McPhail his largest squad in 10 years. "We have some talented young men who have worked really hard over the summer. The development over the next two and a half months will determine a lot," McPhail said. "There is great team chemistry and a desire to be amongst the best teams in the Southeast."
Coach McPhail will look to freshmen Michael Davis, Luke Anton, Craig Simpkins and Cody Hodgins to help with University of Houston transfer Nate Trimble and returnees Chris Holstein, Jon Bernal and Matt Barrett.

St. Andrews finished fourth in the poll with Pfeiffer fifth followed by Erskine, Limestone, Coker, Belmont Abbey, Mount Olive and Barton respectively rounding-out the poll standings.

BC women tapped 9th in preseason poll

August 26, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — Lees-McRae will be gunning for its unprecedented 11th consecutive conference tournament championship as the Lady Bobcats start the year ranked No. 1 in the Conference Carolinas Preseason Volleyball Coaches' Poll. Barton, coming off a 4-31 season (2-18 in league) was selected in a tie for 11th.

The Lady Bobcats, having graduated All-Conference first team member Daviana Metti, won both the conference tournament semifinal and final in extremely competitive five-game matches. "I do not like being ranked ‘preseason number one' again this year," commented Head Coach Jamie Petrik. "There are expectations assigned to it. Especially with how well Anderson and Limestone finished last year and how good they should be this year."
Coach Petrik will look to senior co-captain Natalie Burns, the Bobcats leading blocker with 110 blocks last year, and redshirt junior co-captain Trisha Reese, coming off an ACL tear last fall, to lead the team. The Lady Bobcats also return juniors Lauren Dickover and Katie-Marie Legg. The respective setter and middle hitter have formed a lethal combination in the middle the past two seasons. Finally, the Lady Bobcats (26-12 overall, 17-3 conference in 2007) return five sophomores, including second team All Conference Carolinas libero Kell Bogdan and outside hitter Whitney Kiser. "We have depth, we are returning four starters, and we have a solid freshmen class," said Petrik. "Now we have to see how resilient we will be."

The Limestone College volleyball team finished strong in the 2007 season with a 20-16 overall record and a 16-4 record in league play. The Saints finished in second place in the Conference Carolinas regular season standings, were runners-up in the conference tournament, and recorded thirteen shut-out victories to finish the fall ranked ninth in the Atlantic Region. Limestone will have a solid core of veterans this season. The Lady Saints will look to returning outside hitters Lynn Milam, Jennifer O'Keeffe, and Melissa Thomas, a 2007 All-Conference and All-Region honoree. Defensive specialist Chelsea Anthony and middle hitter Samantha Flannery will also play major roles this season. Limestone's 2008 roster also features three more returnees and eight newcomers.

With five returning starters and the largest freshman class in head coach Jennifer Bell's career, expectations are high for the Anderson University volleyball team in 2008. "Everywhere I go there's a buzz," Bell said. "People tell me we're supposed to be good this year. It's exciting to think about. I'm trying not to get too excited because we are so young. If we didn't earn respect before last year, we earned it last year.
The Lady Trojans were 20-18 overall and 14-6 in Conference Carolinas last season. In 10 seasons at Anderson, Bell has led the Lady Trojans to five 20-win seasons, including three of the last four years. Bell expects senior Amanda Edwards to be one of the top players in Conference Carolinas. Edwards led the team in total kills (519) and kills per game (3.84) last season. She needs 357 kills to become Anderson's all-time leader.

Rounding out the poll 4-11 was: Pfeiffer, Mount Olive, St. Andrews, Belmont Abbey, Coker, Barton & Converse (tied), and Queens respectively.

BC men picked 11th in preseason poll

August 26, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — The 2008 Limestone College men's soccer team has been selected as the Conference Carolinas favorite in the Preseason Coaches' Poll released this week. Meanwhile, the Barton Bulldogs, coming off a 5-13-1 season (1-8-1 in the league) will be looking to move up from their predicted spot of 11th.

Limestone is planning to build on its success from the last two seasons, which have seen the squad's best overall finishes in the Conference Carolinas standings, a conference tournament championship, and a NCAA tournament berth. Although the Saints finished third in the conference in 2007 (10-6-1 overall & 6-3-1 league), the season ended sooner than expected with a first-round loss in the conference tournament. However, this disappointing result has given the 2008 team a little extra motivation and incentive for the upcoming season.
The Saints have an experienced core of players returning, including team captains Tom Beattie, Ali Benson, and Dominic Casciato. Limestone's current roster features four NSCAA 2007 All-Region team members, the Conference Carolinas Freshman of the Year, and four All-Conference honorees. Eight incoming players and two athletes who red shirted last season will add even more talent to Limestone's team.

Head Coach Chris Whalley returns for his fourth season at the helm of the Lees-McRae College soccer team after guiding the team to its best season in program history in 2007. The Bobcats finished the year with a program record 21 wins, (21-2-1 overall & 9-1 league), and qualified for the NCAA Men's Soccer Championships for the first time in program history, winning the Southeast Regional before falling in the Elite Eight.
After winning the Conference Carolinas Regular Season and Tournament Championships in 2007, the first time in conference history a team has claimed both in the same season, the Bobcats return a great deal of experience with 17 letter winners from last season. Twelve new Bobcats also join the fold and will push the returnees as the Bobcats look to return to the NCAA Men's Soccer Championships. The Bobcats enter 2008 as the tenth ranked team in the country according to the NSCAA/adidas preseason poll.
"We are very excited about the upcoming season as we look to improve upon last season and achieve the goals we have set for ourselves," stated Whalley. "The returning players are anxious to get started as are the players we've added to the roster. I am happy with how we're looking thus far in training camp, the depth of the squad is nice, however we're by no means satisfied and will be striving to be playing in November."

Belmont Abbey College was picked to finish third in the preseason coaches poll for the second consecutive year. The Abbey men's soccer team returns 18 starters from last season's 13-9-1 (6-4 conference) unit that advanced to the conference tournament semifinals. The Crusaders return all-conference performers Kyle Fenner and Paul Goding, who were two of the Crusaders five selections. Fenner was named to the second-team, while Goding earned a spot on the third team. Both players went on to earn third-team all-region honors.

Queens finished fourth in the poll with Pfeiffer fifth followed by Anderson, St. Andrews, Coker, Erskine, Mount Olive and Barton respectively rounding-out the poll standings.

BC women picked 11th in preseason poll

August 26, 2008

THOMASVILLE, NC — Lees-McRae College has been picked No. 1 in the Women's Cross Country Preseason Poll while Barton, which features six newcomers, was picked in a tie for 11th.

After a breakout year, where the Lees-McRae Bobcats won their seventh conference title in ten years and won the NCAA Southeast Region title, they are looking for a repeat performance.
"We know what we are capable of doing, now going out each day and proving is our task," said Coach Craig McPhail. "We are a year stronger, mature, and mentally prepared for the challenges ahead, so I am excited about our chances." All-Conference performers Ashley May, Dana Lindholm, Carla Swart, April Harris, Demarea Colson, along with Gina Valenti give the Bobcats a solid six and they will need Jenny Hurd, Karyn Bragman and newcomer Kira Shoemaker to help get back to the 2007 accolades they received. "We will have our work cut out for us as everyone will want to come after us, so we'll be ready for anything," McPhail said.Anderson University head cross country coach Randy Greer believes his team can also challenge for a region championship in 2008, as the Trojans finish second in the league preseason poll. "Our women's team will be five strong," Greer said. "We will have to see where everybody is health-wise. I hope we have an injury-free season. I really think we've got a team that can compete for a conference and region title if everyone is healthy. The Anderson women survived several injuries and a lack of depth last season to finish second in Conference Carolinas and eighth in the region. Gone is Jennifer Hitt, who won her fourth straight Conference Carolinas individual title in '08 but leading the way will be Diana Willard who qualified for her second trip to the NCAA Division II meet last fall. Willard recorded four top-four finishes last season.
"Diana had her best year last year," Greer said. "She ran her best time in cross country and finished second in the region. She is probably the favorite to win the region this year. She has a bright senior year ahead of her if she trains smart. She has experience. It's her time."
Also returning are Chelsea Rogers, Ashley McClellion, and Ashley Blome. "Our top five will be real solid," Greer said. "As long as they're all running and ready to go, I think we will be able to compete just about everywhere we go this year."

The Converse College Valkyries' cross country team is charging up for what is anticipated to be one of the best seasons in the program's history. Last year, Converse surprised the conference with a fourth-place league finish after being picked eighth in the ‘07 preseason coaches' poll. This year the team is picked third.
Seniors Carrie Powell and Betsy Ruppert will lead the team's returning runners. Coach Mike Coggins, who just joined the Valkyrie staff earlier this year, is accompanied by five new athletes. "We've added some new talent to our team and I can't wait to see what this team can accomplish. I expect to see them do well and I'm sure that our new additions will only improve our performance this season," said head coach Mike Coggins.
