BC golfers shatter records, but fall in playoff

September 30, 2008

ROCKY MOUNT, NC - The Mount Olive College men's golf team shattered its school scoring record with a sensational 14-under par round of 274 on Tuesday, then defeated Barton in a one hole, 10-man playoff to win the 9th annual Gardner's BBQ Dogfight at Ford's Colony Country Club.
The Trojans rallied from five shots back of Barton after Monday's first round to force a playoff. Mount Olive shot 281-274-555 (-21) for 36 holes while Barton finished at 276-279-555 (-21). Cape Fear Community College was a distant third at 283-295-578 (+2), edging St. Andrews Presbyterian College (288-291-579) and Pfeiffer University (284-295-579), who deadlocked for fourth place in the 11-team field. The 274 was Mount Olive's one day school record while the 276 on Monday tied Barton's lowest round ever. The 36-hole total of 555 was the all-time low for both schools. Soft greens made for ideal scoring, and the players took advantage of it, despite the 7,095 yards the par-72 course traverses.
The University of North Carolina, which fielded four players, swept the individual honors. Patrick Barrett was medalist at 66-64-130 (-14), winning by six shots over Tar Heel teammates Chase McFarland (68-68-136) and Matt Raudenbush (65-71-136). Barrett's 8-under 64 broke the course record by five shots. All total, 47 of 132 rounds in the two-day event were under par.
Barton's Jonathan Burke (66-71), Mount Olive's Ryan Campbell (70-67) and East Carolina's Jake Colley (68-69) and Conner Sock (69-68) tied for 4th place. Burke, the 2007 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year, was just one shot off the school one-round record of 65 (held by Josh Talton) with hisĀ 6-under 66 in the first round. Mount Olive's Scott Woodard (71-67-138) and Barton's Tom Muto Jr. (71-67) tied for 8th at 138 and Pfeiffer's Laurence Noott was 10th at 72-67-139.
In the playoff, five players each from Barton and Mount Olive teed off on No. 1, then played the 432-yard, par-4 as a 10-some. The four best scores of five from each team were added up on that hole, and MOC was 1-under, thanks to a 25-foot birdie putt from Campbell, while Barton was 1-over.

"There were some incredibly low numbers put on the board during this tournament," 12th year Barton head coach John Hackney said. "We played very well for two days, and the crazy thing about it, is that if we had putted better on Tuesday, when we averaged 32.8 putts, we could've have gone even deeper. But hats off to Mount Olive. They have an excellent team and played superbly to catch us, then prevailed in the playoff. The rest of the country better look out for Conference Carolinas teams this season, because there are a lot of schools playing some great golf in our league."

Mount Olive, Barton, St. Andrews, Pfeiffer and Lees-McRae all hail from Conference Carolinas.

David Boyce finished 11th for Barton at 69-71–140, Daniel Castleberry was T21 at 73-70–143 and Dalton Rich placed T27 at 70-75–145.

The Barton B team fired 288-298–586 to finish 7th. Senior Nicolas Moreau powered that Bulldogs' unit with a career-best 79-73–142, good for T15, while senior Marcus Dunning was 26th at 73-71–144. Taylor Hernandez (73-77–150), Will Vinson (73-77–150) and Darren Smith (78-78–156) completed the B team lineup for Barton.

Barton's Nichols named Player of Week

September 30, 2008

High Point, N.C. — Barton College's Eboni Nichols (5-3 overall, 4-0 conf.) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas women's soccer Player of the Week during week number five in the 2008 season.

Eboni Nichols, a senior midfielder from Dale City, VA, sparkled this week as Barton remained atop the Conference Carolinas standings with a 3-0 win at Converse College and a 3-2 double-overtime home win against Lees-McRae. Against Converse, Nichols scored the second goal after receiving a corner kick. On Saturday evening, Nichols helped her squad rally from a late 2-0 deficit. In the 80th minute, Allie Wilkerson sent a cross to Nichols, who walked over the ball, thus leaving it for Hilary Peterson for Barton's first goal.

Less than two minutes later, Wilkerson took a through-ball from Meagan Bynum and flicked it right to a running Nichols, who put the tying goal in the net. Two minutes into the second overtime, Wilkerson passed to Peterson, who dropped the ball to Nichols, who fired a shot diagonally from 10 yards on the right into the middle of the net for the match-winner. For the season, Nichols now has three goals and one assist for Barton, which has won three straight.

#11 Lees-McRae men survive scare from Barton

September 28, 2008

WILSON, NC - An "own goal" with less than two minutes left in the second overtime lifted nationally 11th-ranked Lees-McRae to a scintillating 2-1 conquest of gritty Barton College Saturday night.
The Bulldogs (1-7 overall, 0-3 Conference Carolinas) held their own with the Bobcats (9-1, 3-0) throughout, and held a 1-0 lead from the 71:51 mark until 83:40. Freshman Paxton Barnes made it 1-0 when he took a through-ball from Kelly Cirbo, outran a few defenders and beat charging LMC keeper Sean Paradise. The Bobcats, who posted a 14-6 advantage in shots on goal, tied it at 1-1 when a deflected clearing attempt by Barton was corralled by Jay Bownes, who then beat freshman Barton keeper Josh Cooper.
After a scoreless first overtime, Nick Robinson outran a defender down the right side and sent a hard cross into the middle, where it bounced off the back off a Barton player and into the net to end the match.
Cooper, getting his first start in place of injured Brian Riesenburg, came up with a bevy of spectacular plays to keep the Bulldogs in the match. He finished with 12 saves. Paradise collected five saves.
The physical match featured 44 fouls, four yellow cards and two red cards. Barton played the final 22 minutes with 10 players while LMC had just 10 men on the field for the final 16 minutes.

Barton women rally past LMC 3-2 in 2OT

September 28, 2008

WILSON, NC - Senior Eboni Nichols scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner two minutes into the second overtime Saturday night, as Barton College rallied to a 3-2 win over Lees-McRae.
The third straight victory vaulted the Lady Bulldogs of second-year head coach Michael Michalakis to 5-3 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Lees-McRae left at 6-2 overall and 2-2 in league action. Barton visits Mount Olive for a 4 p.m. conference contest on Wednesday afternoon.
Vickie Rich opened the scoring for the Bobcats. Tiffany Rodman fired a shot that was saved by Barton junior goalie Ashley Gregory, but Rich was there for the follow-up that went off the fingertips of a lunging Gregory. LMC made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when Rich outraced a defender down the left side and sent in a cross from 30 yards that Rodman headed into the net.
The lead remained 2-0 until late in regulation. Michalakis had re-inserted starters Dillon Sauls, Nichols and senior forward Allie Wilkerson with 15 minutes left in regulation, and their fresh legs paid off. At 80:59, Wilkerson made a run down the left side and crossed the ball into the middle, where Nichols walked over the ball and left it for freshman forward Hilary Peterson, who beat the goalie.
Just over a minute later, senior Meagan Bynum sent a through-ball down the middle, where Wilkerson outraced four defenders, ran onto the ball and flicked it right to Nichols, who scooted the ball under the LMC keeper.
After a scoreless first OT, Wilkerson nicked a pass to Peterson, who passed it to Nichols running toward the goal on a the right side. Closely marked, Nichols hit a diagonal shot into the middle of the net for the winning goal. Wilkerson finished with three assists while Nichols and Peterson had one assist each.
Barton was outshot 15-8. Gregory came up with 13 saves while LMC's Marissa Middleton stopped five.
"I didn't think we were mentally into the game for the first 75 minutes," Michalakis said. "We were physical, because we were working the field. In the last 15 minutes, I just think reality set in that we really didn't want to lose this game. That's when we put everything to work and came up with two great goals. After that, I felt like we were going to win because we were the better team at the end."

Four Barton players score in 4-0 victory

September 24, 2008

WILSON, NC - Host Barton College dominated play Wednesday night in a battle between winless men's soccer teams, defeating Chowan University 4-0 while holding the Braves to no shots.
The victory raised the Bulldogs' record to 1-6 while Chowan fell to 0-9. Barton entertains Lees-McRae College at 5 p.m. Saturday while Chowan will be home vs. Lenoir-Rhyne.
Barton finished with eight shots on goal. The Bulldogs scored on their only attempt of the first half when junior Carter Ellis (Wilson, NC) beat a defender, then scored from right in front of the goal at 39:48.
In the second half, freshman Kieran McGurk (Glasgow, Scotland) registered a pair of assists to give the Bulldogs a 3-0 cushion. At 59:16, Matt Burleson (Newport News, VA) headed in a serve from McGurk, then freshman Matt Arnold (Henderson, NC) settled a through-ball from McGurk less than a minute later and fired a shot into the right side of the goal. Junior Stephen Main (Glasgow, Scotland) finished off the scoring in the 81st minute when he headed a serve from William Stakes (Wilson, NC) into the upper left part of the goal.
Junior Josh Cenci (Chesapeake, VA) tallied four saves — all in the second half — for the Braves. Freshman Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, OH), who was knocked out in a collision at the top of the goalie box with 20 minutes left, shared the shutout with backup keeper Josh Cooper (Pine Level, NC).

"I think the biggest thing was that it would have been easy for our guys to hang their heads after the first 30 minutes, when we dominated possession-wise, but couldn't find the back of the net," second-year head coach Matt Akins said, "but they showed a lot of heart by getting out there and competing, and really going after it in the second half. The guys came out like they were a 6-0 team, not one that was 0-6."

September 23, 2008

SUMTER, SC — The Barton College tennis teams had a solid performance over the weekend at the Conference Carolinas Fall Individual Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center. It marked their debut under first-year head coach Tom Schrecengost.
For the Lady Bulldogs, Summer Chase won the "C" Flight singles bracket. She beat Jennifer Hawkins of Lees-McRae 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 in the first round; breezed by Mount Olive's Kelly Dunlap 6-0, 6-0 in the quarterfinals and rallied past Pfeiffer's Maddy Billeter 6-7, 6-0, 10-4 in the semifinals. She won the final by walkover.
On the men's side, P-A Desilets advanced to the finals of the "C" Flight singles bracket with 6-4, 6-4 wins over Andrew Hershelman of Limestone and Frank Pouchet of Pfeiffer. He lost in the finals to Mount Olive's Bevan Hewitt 6-0, 6-3.
Desilets/Eduardo Stefani made it to the finals of "C" Flight doubles with 8-5 conquests over tandems from Erskine and Pfeiffer. They lost to McKinze/Ramirez of Queens in the finale.
Cesar Grobel/Matt Jackman emerged the "A" Flight doubles consolation title. They lost 8-6 in the first round of the main draw and won the draw with a victory over Sumner/Karendal of Lees-McRae and a walkover. Grobel also bounced back from an early setback to win the "A" Flight consolation draw with a 6-3, 6-4 conquest of Lees-McRae's Steve Karendal.
Other Bulldogs winning matches in the three-day event were: Leandro Peron, Diego Salinas and Ahdai Newsome. Nadia Filmater and Lindsey Toth also represented the Lady Bulldogs.
"I think we got off to a pretty rugged start," Schrecengost said, "but we progressed as the weekend went along. That's what you want to see. We had some players win, or advance to the finals, of their brackets. We've got some work to do. That's undeniable. But we are getting better on a day-to-day basis, and that's what we're trying to do."
All the conference schools except Anderson were represented at the tournament.
Schrecengost believes his team needs to shore up its technique, communication and chemistry in doubles to be successful this season.
"We need to play together more, with different combinations, and try to do some new things," he said. "The talent is there. I think we have good players on both sides (men and women)."

Volleyball falls in four in home opener

September 17, 2008

WILSON, NC — Barton College got off to a strong start in its volleyball home opener Wednesday night before falling in four sets to visiting Chowan University 25-21, 21-25, 17-25, 18-25.

Chowan improved to 8-5 overall while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 1-6. Barton plays at Anderson University in a Conference Carolinas opener Saturday afternoon at 2.

Desaray Turner rapped 15 kills and made 12 digs to pace the Lady Braves. Antoinette McCullough notched 12 kills, one solo block and five block assists while Victoria Lewis netted 12 kills and three aces. Nicole Shoup added 12 digs and setter Melissa Hallam had 40 assists.

For Barton, senior Liz Strange and sophomore Melissa Ritter led the way with nine kills apiece, followed by Stacy Way and Meagan Parrott with six apiece. Jenn Donaldson was tough up front with three solo blocks and one assist, Cami Fledderman recorded 31 assists and three aces. Way added three aces. Defensively, Kristen Peschock had 15 digs, followed by Cassie Blackmon and Strange with 11 apiece.

Barton rallied from a 16-18 deficit to win the first set 25-21 and was leading 18-16 in the second set before the Lady Braves rallied to win 25-21 behind back-to-back kills from Lewis. The Lady Bulldogs fell behind 1-7 to start the third set and never led in dropping a 17-25 decision. The fourth set was close throughout, but Chowan broke free by scoring the final three points in a 25-18 victory.

"We need to get more energy throughout our team," Barton head coach Patrick Morgan said. "Our offense did fine, but defensively, and ball-control wise, we didn't have enough energy. We weren't moving our feet good enough to get into position and they were offensive-minded enough to capitalize on that. They were an athletic team and were well-prepared. They have a lot of nice young players and should do well the rest of the season."
