Membership in the Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame swelled to 100 with the induction of Rufus P. Outland (1959), H. Alton Hill (1967), Gary W. Farmer (1970), Mark A. Raynor (1996) and Tanisha Adams Dixon (1998) Friday night.
All were big hits with a record turnout of some 250.
The "veteran" trio of Outland, Hill and Farmer demonstrated oratorical skills that are more polished.
Raynor and Adams Dixon did not proclaim to be public speakers but acquitted themselves well. The acceptance comments of each after being presented by master of ceremonies Russell Rawlings (1978) prompted a standing ovation.
This hall-of-fame/ Bulldog Club banquet strayed in form from the previous 26 on a rainy night.
Not only was the crowd the largest but the venue was a tent equipped with heat. Another first was the presence of an interpreter provided by Farmer for the hearing-impaired members of the audience. The tent even leaked.
Farmer spent 32 years in deaf education before retiring at Elm City Middle School last year.
Each inductee was eloquently enshrined by Rawlings.
"It has been a remarkable journey," Rawlings said of Outland's coaching career that spans nearly 50 years. "One that now brings Rufus Outland to a place where only the best of the Bulldogs reside."
Of Hill, Rawlings commented: "For whatever was mentioned at the outset in regard to his competitive nature, take loyalty and multiply it tenfold."
Hill promptly thanked Rawlings for "all those wonderful lies."
"It is enormously fitting that Gary Farmer take his rightful place in this Hall of Fame, having excelled as an athlete, teacher and coach," said Rawlings.
Rawlings' praise of Raynor included: "Mark Raynor truly was one of the best, if not the best, to ever wear the royal blue and white of Barton's baseball team."
Adams Dixon landed in the hall of fame her first year of eligibility and Rawlings noted: "Tanisha, only a few athletes have made their way into this Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility, but let me assure you none have deserved it more than you."
Capsuling their hall-of-fame credentials:
OUTLAND _ Developed a legendary post-graduate basketball program at Frederick Military Academy (Va.), won 260 games and 24 tournament titles and sent 64 players to the NCAA Division I ranks. At Norfolk (Va.) Collegiate School, his boys and girls basketball teams combined for a 115-45 record and his tennis teams went 80-20. Played basketball for three years and also coached the junior varsity to a 13-3 record at Atlantic Christian (now Barton) College.
HILL _ Proclaimed Kiwanis Male Athlete of the Year as a sophomore and junior. The 6-foot-6 center averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in four years with the Bulldogs. In track, established program records in the 220 hurdles, 330 hurdles, 440 hurdles, 880 run, 440 relay and mile relay. Coached for over 30 years in Virginia.
FARMER _ Starting catcher and/or first baseman for four years. Batted over .400 as a freshman and sophomore and over .300 as a junior and senior. Started the physical education program and boosters club at Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf, where he coached every sport. Twice a World Series umpire with United States Slo-Pitch Softball Association.
RAYNOR _ Starting Bulldogs shortstop for four seasons. Batted over .300 each of his first three years. Rewrote the record books his senior season, when he batted nearly .500 and hit 12 home runs. Starred on 1993 and 1995 championship teams. Spent five years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization.
ADAMS DIXON _ Only Barton women's basketball player to garner team Most Valuable Player honors all four years. Ranks third in career scoring with 1,695 points and is among all-time leaders in rebounds (913) and steals (293). Started four years in volleyball and twice hailed Kiwanis Female Athlete of the Year.
Outland quipped he came to AC as a "great basketball player, but when guards like Bobby Dunn won't pass you the ball, you can't score."
"I have been waiting for this night for a long time," commented the appreciative Hill, who departed the podium with basketball in hand.
Farmer remarked that he grew up 300 yards from Barton, and reasoned the process of reaching the Hall of Fame has come 360 degrees.
"I am nothing without baseball and Barton College," he contended.
Raynor described his 1993 championship team as a "close-knit family," adding: "They made playing so much fun. That team was the most important team I've played on."
Adams Dixon was coached by Wendee Saintsing in both basketball and volleyball and, in justifying her place in the Hall of Fame, she said to Saintsing: "Coach, I was just doing it the best I could.
She concluded by remarking: You cannot honor me without honoring my family. Barton, you are my family."
And she and four others joined a distinguished family indeed

HIGH POINT, NC — The Barton College women's basketball team has been voted the Conference Carolinas coaches preseason poll favorite for the upcoming 2008-09 season. Barton has played in three of the last five NCAA D-II tournaments. Head coach Wendee Saintsing, in her 20th season, returns three starters in Sara Fleming, Esty Flores, and Kendra Thomas and five others from a team that was 19-8 overall and 16-4 in league play to finish as the regular-season runner-up in Conference Carolinas.
Last season, Flores was a first-team, all-league choice, Thomas made second team and Fleming was honorable mention, so Coach Saintsing has a solid nucleus to build upon. Five guards and two posts have been added to the roster. Freshmen Jannetta Robinson, Faith Hunter and Vente Cobb should bring exciting play to the guard position for the Lady Bulldogs. Inside, junior Shamita Alston was the leading rebounding in NJCAA D-II basketball last season while Kelsey Sill, a sophomore transfer from Brevard, should add more depth at the post position. That group, along with the rest of the newcomers and returnees will hopefully make Barton a contender for Conference Carolinas supremacy…and beyond.
Belmont Abbey College comes-in tied in the second spot in the preseason coaches' poll. The Abbey women's basketball team is coming off of its most successful season since 2004-05, posting a 19-10 overall record and a 13-7 mark in league play. The Crusaders finished fourth in the conference standings and reached the semifinal round of the conference tournament after it was picked to finish seventh in last year's preseason poll. The Abbey returns nine players from last year's team and welcomes five highly-regarded newcomers.
Mount Olive College was also tied for the second place spot in the preseason poll. The Trojans are coming off the best season in school history following their first-ever Conference Carolinas tournament championship and first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Trojans return four full- or part-time starters from last year's squad, which posted a 21-11 overall and 15-5 league record.
In the frontcourt, Mount Olive brings back junior and two-time All-Conference selection Helen Moore, along with 6-0 senior forward Alisa Jones. The backcourt is anchored by seniors Tomeka Prichard and Brittney Robich, who rank first and second in school history, respectively, in career three-point shooting. The Trojans also look forward to the return of guard Meaghan Vanderhorst, who missed most of the last two seasons with a knee injury.
Anderson University finished fourth in the poll and will be under new leadership with head coach Jim Brunelli inheriting a team that was 28-4 overall and the regular season league champions with a 19-1 record in Conference Carolinas play last season
Coach Brunelli's will have his first Anderson team built around seniors Keana Boyd and Genia Holbrook. Boyd, a first-team All-Conference Carolinas pick, led the team in scoring at 13.4 points per game. Holbrook is a rugged inside player who averaged 6.6 rebounds per game last season.
Rounding out the lady's poll 5-10 was: Queens, Limestone, Pfeiffer, Lees-McRae, Coker, Converse, St. Andrews, and Erskine respectively.
Women's Basketball Preseason Poll (# of First place votes in parenthesis)
1. Barton College (7) 116
T-2. Belmont Abbey College (2) 103
T-2. Mount Olive College (1) 103
4. Anderson University (2) 90
