WILSON, NC — Francis Marion University sophomore guard Shannon Bates knocked down a 10-foot jumper in the lane with 16 seconds left, then, after three Barton College timeouts, stole the inbounds pass with five seconds left to help the Patriots capture a season-opening 68-66 road win in Wilson Gymnasium.

Barton cashed in 19-of-22 foul shots for 86.4 percent while FMU was 18-of-25 for 72 percent. The sloppy game featured 33 turnovers by the Patriots and 29 by the Lady Bulldogs.
Barton got off to a strong start and led until less than five minutes remained in the opening half. That's when FMU's pressure defense led to a number of Barton turnovers and the visitors surged to a 37-34 halftime edge. Barton regained the lead with 15 minutes left and never trailed again until Bates' basket with 16 seconds left. Barton's biggest lead of the second half was seven points at 62-55 with 6:47 to play. In its final 17 possessions of the game, the Lady Bulldogs turned the ball over 10 times, went 0-5 from the floor and made all four foul shots.
After a bevy of turnovers both ways down the stretch, Bates cut across the lane and hit a contested shot that proved to be the game-winner. Following three timeouts in front of its bench, a Barton guard threw the ball right into Bates' hands on the inbounds play and Francis Marion ran out the clock.
Senior forward Sara Fleming (Stanley, NC) finished with 14 points and eight rebounds for Barton. Freshman guard Jannetta Robinson (Willard, NC) added 11 points and six boards in her collegiate debut.
Neither team shot the ball well. Barton was 22-of-70 for 31.4 percent and FMU swished 22-of-69 shots for 31.9 percent. FMU controlled the boards 56-45.

WILSON, NC - After 110 minutes of scoreless soccer, Limestone College netted its first four penalty kicks on a rainy Monday night to advance 4-2 past host Barton in the opening round of the Conference Carolinas Women's Soccer Tournament.
Fifth-seeded Limestone, now 8-9-1, will play at top-seeded Belmont Abbey Thursday night at 7 while fourth-seeded Barton finished its season at 8-7-3. For the Lady Bulldogs, it was a bad taste of déjà vu, since they exited in the first round 5-4 on penalty kicks after a scoreless finale against Queens last season.
Barton senior Jessica Galasso was the first player to take a penalty kick, and it was batted away by diving Limestone keeper Brittany Clark. Senior Lura Carter, freshman Hope Lee, sophomore Monica Velez, and freshman Ashley Alderin-Fleagle all scored on their PKs around a miss from Barton senior Allie Wilkerson to seal the outcome for the Saints at 4-2. Junior Dillon Sauls and sophomore Leah Singleton hit their shots for the Lady Bulldogs.
After a scintillating start to the season, Barton was atop the league standings, but went 1-4-3 in its last eight matches.
The Lady Bulldogs had an apparent goal denied with 30 minutes left in regulation when the official stopped play for an injured Saint at midfield. With just over three minutes left, Velez had a point-blank shot denied by Barton keeper Ashley Gregory, and Vanessa Jarrett's follow-up went wide left.
The two teams slogged through two 10-minute overtimes without any real threats, resulting in PKs.
Limestone finished with 11 shots on goal and Barton tallied four shots on goal. Clark totaled four saves and Gregory notched 11.
