WILSON, NC — Barton College seniors Errol Frails (Wilson, NC), David King (Raleigh, NC) and Bobby Buffaloe (Fuquay-Varina, NC) won their 99th career game Thursday night, and it was a big one in the "Dog House."
The host Bulldogs never trailed in defeating archrival Mount Olive 81-67 in front of a record 2,211 fans, thus securing a share of the Conference Carolinas Regular-Season Men's Basketball Championship with the Trojans. Both teams finished at 17-3 in league play. Barton, ranked 5th in the Southeast Region, is 21-6 overall and MOC, 8th in the Southeast, stands 18-9.
Both teams will have byes in the opening round of the conference tournament, then host quarterfinal tilts on their respective home courts at 7 p.m. Monday. Barton will play either Limestone (8th seed) or Queens University of Charlotte (9th seed). Mount Olive will entertain either Erskine (7th) or St. Andrews (10th).
Barton is now 13-0 at home this season and a remarkable 56-3 (.949) in the seniors' careers in the "Dog House." Thursday's victory assured the Bulldogs of the top seed, and home-court advantage, throughout the conference tournament. MOC will be the second seed.
Barton never trailed and had a double-digit lead for much of the game. Workhorse forward L.J. Dunn dominated with his 6-foot-3 frame for the Bulldogs, scoring 22 points and yanking 17 rebounds — both game-highs. The guard trio of Aaron Suggs (12 points), Buffaloe (11) and Greg Mammel (10) combined for 33 points and 11 assists. King tallied eight points, 14 rebounds, two blocks and a pair of big dunks while Frails added eight points and sparked the Bulldogs' defense.
The score was tied at 2-2 and 4-4, and then Barton went on an 18-8 run to take control at 22-12. Dunn, who had a double-double (points-rebounds) by halftime, scrambled down low for two putbacks and popped out to hit three jumpers as well. Still, the Trojans battled back within one point, 34-33, behind the play of Mike Holloman (12 points, 7 rebounds) and Kendrick Easley (11 points, 4 assists).
Barton was nursing a scant 36-33 lead at intermission, but opened the second half on a 19-7 run and was never threathened from there. The closest MOC got in the final 14 minutes was eight points. That's when Frails hit two baskets to trigger a run that sparked Barton to a comfortable 17-point lead.
The Bulldogs controlled the backboards 51-37 and blocked seven shots. Barton finished 32-of-73 from the floor for 43.8 percent while MOC was 28-of-66 for 42.4 percent. Barton also outscored the Trojans 23-10 on points off turnovers.
In head coach Ron Lievense's 13-year career at Barton, the Bulldogs now have a 19-16 lead in the series with Mount Olive. The senior trio now sports a 99-25 record (.798) in their four years and posted a 68-12 (.850) in league play with three regular-season conference titles.

WILSON, NC — The Barton College women's basketball wanted to win the Conference Carolinas regular-season title in a bad way on Thursday night, and it showed.
The Lady Bulldogs came out firing, raced to a 48-18 halftime lead and then cruised to a 79-45 conquest of archrival Mount Olive in a regular-season ending battle between teams deadlocked for first place. Junior point guard Esty Flores swished 17 of her game-high 24 points in the first half, when Barton outscored cold-shooting MOC 20-2 in points off turnovers.
The victory gives Barton, 21-5 and a winner of seven straight, the regular-season championship — and well as home-court advantage throughout the Conference Carolinas Tournament. Barton, ranked eighth in the Southeast Region, will host a quarterfinal game Tuesday night at 7 in the "Dog House." The Bulldogs finished 18-4 in league play, followed by Mount Olive at 17-5.
Barton, which canned 52 percent of its shots in the first half, finished 30-of-68 from the floor for 44.1 percent. MOC was just 18-of-61 for 29.5 percent, including 2-of-15 from 3-point land. Barton also had a 48-40 advantage in rebounding.
Flores hit 8-of-19 shots, including two bombs, and was 6-of-7 from the foul line. She added three assists and three steals. Senior guard Blair Burke added 10 points, post Sharnita Alston notched eight points, 10 rebounds; Jamila Johnson contributed nine points, eight rebounds; and Destiny Hamlin had seven points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Helen Moore scored 13 and Jasmine Whitby 11 for the Trojans.

Both the Barton College women's and men's basketball teams won their games at Belmont Abbey Tuesday night…and Mount Olive did the same at Queens University of Charlotte.
Thus, Barton and Mount Olive will do battle Thursday night for the Conference Carolinas Championships in Wilson Gymnasium, a.k.a. the "Dog House." The Barton women defeated Belmont Abbey 77-72 while the Bulldogs topped the Abbey men 79-70.
The Lady Bulldogs, ranked 9th in the Southeast Region, have won six straight and stand 20-5 overall and 17-4 in the conference. Mount Olive is 21-5 overall, 17-4 in the league and ranked 8th in the region. Thursday's victor will win the outright regular-season title and have homecourt advantage throughout the league tourney, since games are played at the home venue of the highest remaining seeds. Mount Olive won the first meeting 87-82 in overtime. The Lady Bulldogs are 12-1 at home and have won six straight. MOC invades with a school-record nine-game winning streak and has won 15 of its last 17.
On the men's side, the Barton men, ranked 5th in the Southeast, rose to 20-6 overall and 16-3 in the league. Mount Olive, ranked 9th, is 18-8 and 17-2. MOC claimed the first meeting this year in a 68-66 thriller. If Barton wins, the Bulldogs would get the top seed in the men's tournament by virtue of sweeping third-seeded Belmont Abbey this season (MOC split with Abbey). The Bulldogs are 11-0 at home this season and have won by an average of 19.5 points in the "Dog House." Only one team, Chowan (84-76) has come within 10 points of Barton on its home floor, where 13th-year head coach Ron Lievense has a win percentage of 90 percent. The Mount Olive men, who were missing star point guard Justin Melton early in the season, have won 12 of their last 13 games and have a six-game road winning streak.
Tip time for the women's game is 5:30 p.m. Thursday. The men will follow at approximately 7:30. It will be "Senior Night" for the men, thus a presentation honoring David King, Errol Frails and Bobby Buffaloe, all members of Barton's 2007 NCAA D-II National Championship team, will be held prior to tipoff.
There will be no advance ticket sales. It is suggested that fans arrive early for this highly anticipated night of action since seating is limited. Tickets prices are as follows: $5 for adults (18 and over); $3 for ages 12-17; free for 12 and under. Barton and Mount Olive students are admitted free with their current school IDs.
