The Barton College men's and women's basketball teams enjoyed another successful season under the direction of veteran head coaches Ron Lievense and Wendee Saintsing, respectively, and that was reflected in the final rankings of the most successful NCAA D-II basketball programs in 2008-09.
The Barton men went 25-7, shared the Conference Carolinas regular season title and won the conference tournament. The Bulldogs then won their first-round game of the NCAA Southeast Regional before exiting in the regional semifinals against host Augusta State. The Lady Bulldogs posted a 22-6 record en route to the Conference Carolinas regular-season championship, but were eliminated in the conference tournament and did not receive an NCAA bid.
The combined men's and women's record of 47-13, for a win percentage of .783, ranked the 2008-09 Barton basketball teams eighth best among nearly 300 schools that have both men's and women's programs. The best overall win percentage of .862 came from Gannon (PA), where the men went 30-4 and the women were 26-5.

WILSON, NC — Tuesday's baseball game (March 31) with visiting N.C. Wesleyan has been moved from an afternoon clash to a 7 p.m. contest at Fleming Stadium.

Former Barton College basketball All-American Anthony "Ant" Atkinson and his Harlem Globetrotter teammates are featured in a seven-page article in the March 30 issue of Sports Illustrated.
Atkinson, who led Barton College to the 2007 NCAA D-II National Championship exactly two years ago, has already had his status elevated to the "Magic Circle" with the Globetrotters, and he recently performed with the team in Raleigh's RBC Center during their North American Tour.
Atkinson is featured in many of the photos in SI and is interviewed as well. Copies should be available at your local newstands this week. The visiting Barton College softball team swept Belmont Abbey in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Crusader Field.
Barton claimed game one by a 6-1 score and took game two by an 8-2 count. Barton improved to 9-15 overall and 4-4 in Conference Carolinas, while the Abbey, playing its home finales of 2009, dipped to 7-23 overall and 8-23 in Conference Carolinas.
In the opener, Barton scored the game's first four runs, plating two in the first on a Claire Severt two-run homer, and added two more in the third to build a 4-0 lead. Belmont Abbey got one back in the bottom of the third as Dani Beres singled home Gina Antonucci, who had earlier reached on a fielder's choice.
That was all of the scoring until the top of the seventh when Barton pushed two runs across, using a double by Kelsey Barnes that scored Stacy Wade. Natalie Phipps followed with a single that scored Barnes for the final run of the game.
Severt earned the win after fanning four in a complete-game effort, allowing one run on six hits. Carrie Markham took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits in five innings, striking out three.
Catcher Alysia Stewart had two of the Abbey's six hits, while Barnes, Severt, Phipps and Amber Fletcher all recorded two hits for Barton, which recorded 10 as a team.
In game two, Barton struck first with a run in the top of the first, but the Abbey would grab the lead in its half of the inning as Antonucci blasted a two-run homer to left center, bringing home Markham, who led off the frame with a single to left.
Belmont Abbey held onto its one-run lead until the fifth inning when Barton exploded for five runs. The victors would add would add two more runs in the sixth to provide the winning margin.
The Abbey finished with six hits as Beres led the way with a pair. Barton recorded 10 as Barnes went 2-for-4 with four runs batted in.

WILSON, NC — Host Barton College defeated Coker 14-5 in the opener, but lost 4-3 in the second game of a Sunday Conference Carolinas baseball doubleheader at Nixon Field.
Barton (19-13 overall, 8-5 league) will entertain Coker (16-16, 4-8) in the deciding nine-inning game of their series at 3:30 Monday afternoon. The weekend set was pushed back one day because of rain.
GAME ONE
Barton banged out 18 hits in the opening game Sunday afternoon as it rolled past visiting Coker 14-5 in a Conference Carolinas baseball game.
Second baseman Will Johnson led the Barton charge at 4-for-4 with 3RBI and three runs scored, including a three-run homer in the crucial six-run fourth inning. Outfielders Wes Francis and Zach Boyette added three hits apiece for the Bulldogs. Francis homered and doubled. Barrett Martin, Ryan McCleney and Chris Rawlings each had two hits, with Rawlings and McCleney rapping doubles. Jonathan Nichols ripped a run-scoring triple in the fifth.
On the mound, senior Brandon Brinson (7-2) went the distance for Barton. In seven innings, he allowed five runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out two. Meanwhile, the Cobas sent five pitchers to the mound, with starter Michael Rogers (4-1) absorbing his first loss. He yielded four runs on five hits and walked one in 2 1/3 innings.
Coker managed nine hits, led by Kevin Schlange, Matthew Kearnes and Trey Lynch with two hits apiece. Kearnes drove in two runs and Schlange hit a solo homer in the fourth inning.
Coker grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second, but Barton tied it at 1-1 in the bottom half of the inning. The Bulldogs added three runs in the third on four hits and never looked back, adding six runs in the fourth and two apiece in the fifth and sixth innings.
GAME TWO
Left-hander Jesse Hatchell limited Barton to three runs on seven hits in Sunday afternoon's second game of a doubleheader as visiting Coker College claimed a split with a 4-3 win.
After yielding a three-run, first-inning home run to Allen Corbett, Hatchell settled in and finished with two strikeouts and one walk over seven innings. Each team finished with seven hits.
The Cobras claimed a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning on singles by Trey Lynch, Karl Ankersen and Matthew Kearnes. After Corbett's homer, Coker plated one run in the second on doubles by Brinley Griffin and Matt Ammons.
The Cobras finished off the scoring in the third on a single by Walker, a stolen base, a walk by Taylor Evans, an RBI groundout by Kevin Schlange and a throwing error.
The remainder of the game was a pitcher's duel between Hatchell (2-3) and Nick Nigito, who had come in for starter and loser Kramer Sneed (2-2) with one out in the third inning.
Hatchell and Nigito each faced the minimum number of batters the rest of the way, with each allowing one hit. Each of those baserunners that got aboard was thrown out trying to steal.
Zach Boyette led Barton batters at 2-for-2 while Ammons went 2-for-3 for the Cobras.

WILSON, NC — Weather has again caused some changes in the Barton College baseball schedule.
The Bulldogs were scheduled to play a Conference Carolinas three-game series with Coker this Saturday and Sunday. Rain has caused the series to be moved back one day. The two teams will now square off in two 7-inning games beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday, with a single 9-inning game to be played at 3:30 on Monday afternoon at Nixon Field.

HIGH POINT, NC — A total of 322 Conference Carolinas student-athletes have earned Academic All-Conference status, including 14 from Barton College.
Member institutions stress the role of "Academics and Athletics Working Together," and the success of this goal is reflected by each of these students.
The 2008-09 Conference Carolinas All-Conference Academic Awards were awarded to junior and senior student-athletes with a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or higher (4.0 scale) in all work completed at their member institution who have played in a conference sponsored sport. Each student-athlete must have attended their member institution for at least one academic year.
Earning spots on the prestigious squad from Barton were: Meagan Bynum (women's soccer), Summer Chase (women's tennis), Will Cobb (men's tennis), Anita Fenner (women's basketball), Sara Fleming (women's basketball), David King (men's basketball), Barrett Martin (baseball), Jimmy Metzinger (men's baseball), Nicolas Moreau (men's golf), Stephanie Salvatore (women's soccer), Dillon Sauls (women's soccer), Harris Smith (men's soccer), Brandon Sneed (baseball), and Corey Winner (men's cross country).

WILSON, NC — Visiting Georgia College & State University scored five runs on four hits in the first inning Wednesday afternoon and never trailed in capturing a tough 7-5 baseball win over Barton at Nixon Field.
The Bobcats, now 21-8 after sweeping the two-game series, are ranked 9th in NCAA D-II. They got the early lead, but had to fight off several Bulldog rallies. Barton closed within 5-4 in the sixth and 6-5 in the seventh, but just couldn't push across the tying run. Barton, ranked 10th in the Southeast Region, slipped to 18-12 overall.
Barton visits Catawba at 6 p.m. Thursday and will entertain Coker for a weekend Conference Carolinas series. The Bulldogs will host the Cobras for a doubleheader at noon on Saturday and play a single game Sunday, weather permitting (rain is expected). GCSU entertains Lander for a Peach Belt Conference series. The teams play at 6 p.m. Friday, then go at it again in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday.
GCSU began its first-inning rally with one out. Danny McCorkell bunted his way aboard and stole second. Derek Johns walked and Steve Muoio singled to load the bases. Catcher Pete Paris doubled home two runs, and with two outs, Buddy Elmore singled home two more and later scored on an error for the 5-0 cushion.
The Bulldogs pulled within 5-3 in the third. Aaron Watkins and J.D. McCarty singled and Wes Francis laid down a sacrifice bunt. Kevin Carty singled, Ryan McCleney hit a sacrifice fly and Jonathan Nichols doubled home the final run of the uprising.
Barton closed within 5-4 in the sixth when Chris Rawlings singled, moved to second on an error and raced home on a fielder's choice. GCSU answered in the seventh on a single by Chandler Snell, a sacrifice, a McCorkell single and a sacrifice fly by Johns. Barton came back with another run in the bottom half of the inning when Francis was hit by a pitch, went to second on a sacrifice, to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch.
The Bobcats finished off the scoring in the eighth on a homer by Paris, who joined McCorkell, Elmore and Snell with two hits apiece. Paris finished with 3RBI. GCSU recorded 11 hits while Barton had seven. The Bulldogs got a 2-for-4 outing from Rawlings.
The Nixon Field mound was toed by nine pitchers, including five Bobcats. GCSU's Luke Rogers went the first three-plus innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Ryan Parson (4-0) followed and got the win by throwing no-hit ball for two innings.
Brandon Brinson (6-2) took the loss for Barton after yielding five runs on four hits in the first inning. Kramer Sneed and Patrick Sherrill fired three innings apiece for the Bulldogs before Nigito finished.

HIGH POINT, N.C. - Barton College's Jessica McFadden (7-13 overall, 2-4 conf.) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas softball Player of the Week during week seven in the 2009 season.
The sophomore center fielder from Wilmingston, N.C., continued to bat at a torrid clip this week as she extended her hitting streak to 20 games (all of Barton's contests this year) and claimed All-Tournament honors in an 11-team field in Hampton, VA . Batting leadoff, she went 15-of-25 in seven games for a sensational .600 average. She also stole 7-of-8 bases and scored six runs. In the Hampton tourney, she was 6-for-11 (.545) in three games.
In a conference doubleheader on Tuesday, McFadden went 6-for-7 and stole one base as the Lady Bulldogs split with visiting St. Andrews Presbyterian College. When Limestone visited on Wednesday, she was 3-for-6, went 3-for-3 in stolen bases, drew one walk and scored twice.
She had a pair of hits in all three games in the Hampton Tournament and went 3-for-3 in stolen bases. For the season, the speedy McFadden is now batting .609.

HIGH POINT, N.C.- Barton College's Hunter Meekins (18-10 overall, 7-4 conf.) has been selected as the NCAA Division II Conference Carolinas baseball Pitcher of the Week during week number seven in the 2009 season.
Meekins, a sophomore from Manteo, N.C., was the stalwart on the mound this week as the Barton College baseball team racked up a 5-2 record, including a 4-1 Conference Carolinas mark, to move into third place in the league standings. Meekins went 2-0 on the mound, allowing just three earned runs in 13 innings. He scattered 14 hits, struck out nine and walked four.
On Wednesday, he went seven innings in an 8-3 win over visiting Shepherd. He yielded just four hits, no earned runs, issued two walks and fanned four. In the deciding game of a league series on Sunday, Meekins helped Barton to a 15-7 win at Limestone. He started and went six innings, scattering 10 hits and allowing three earned runs. He walked two and struck out five.
Meekins, who has pitched 36 innings for Barton lowered his ERA to 4.75. He has struck out 22 and walked 11 this season.
