Barton golfers seize Conference Championship!

April 21, 2009

The Barton men and the Pfeiffer women claimed the 2009 Conference Carolinas Golf Championships on the Tanglewood Park Championship Course on a stormy Tuesday afternoon.

Barton won the 54-hole men's event by two shots over Coker in a dramatic finish while Pfeiffer won by nine shots over Belmont Abbey College on the women's side. Belmont Abbey junior Carley Warrington and Limestone's Kyle Scruggs won the individual titles. Warring won by two strokes, while Scruggs posted a 216 to win by one shot.

The men's tournament was lengthened by two rain delays in the final two hours of competition. The final putt dropped at 7:25 p.m., meaning the players were on and off the course for nearly nine hours.

The men's tournament came down to the final group as senior captain Jonathan Burke of Barton saved par from a greenside bunker by holing a clutch 12-foot putt on the final hole to clinch the title for the Bulldogs, who edged Coker by two shots. If Burke (the 2008 Conference Carolinas Player of the Year and 2007 league tournament medalist) had not made par, 2009 Player of the Year Chris Marsh of Coker had a 10-foot birdie putt that would have sent the teams to a playoff.

Barton posted a three-day score of 885, including a 298 today on the par-70, 6,800-yard layout. The Bulldogs earned the automatic bid to the NCAA South/Southeast Regional May 4-6 in Florence, AL. It is their 10th straight NCAA appearance.

Limestone (899), led by Scrugg's medalist-winning score of 216 finished fourth. Scruggs edged out Marsh and Burke by one shot. Queens (903), Anderson (905), Pfeiffer (907), Mount Olive (910), St. Andrews Presbyterian (924), Erskine (937) and Lees-McRae (1141) rounded out the field.

In the women's tournament, Pfeiffer won back-to-back titles after leading all 54 holes of competition, posting a final team score of 958 to defeat Belmont Abbey by nine strokes.

Charlene Reid led the Falcon efforts with a second place finish with a score of 234. Warrington won her second tournament of the spring with the two shot victory, edging Reid by two shots with a three-day score of 232. She carded rounds of 82, 73 and 77. Queens finished third with a score of 973, while Anderson (1002), Mount Olive (1054), Erskine (1125) and Limestone (1255) rounded out the field.

Barton golfers move into conference lead

April 20, 2009

CLEMMONS, SC — Barton College shot a 294 in high winds Monday to seize the lead after two days of the three-day Conference Carolinas Championships on the Tanglewood Park Championship Course.

The Bulldogs counted 72s from senior Jonathan Burke and Daniel Castleberry and 75s from juniors Tom Muto and Taylor Hernandez in grabbing a four-shot lead over  Belmont Abbey and a six-shot edge over Coker. An 81 from freshman David Boyce was dropped. Playing with Belmont Abbey (who had a four-shot lead over Barton after the first 18 holes) and Pfeiffer, who was six back, the Bulldogs got a jump start on the first hole Monday when Castleberry holed a shot from 90 yards for an eagle. His approach landed by the hole, jumped just past it, then sucked back into the cup, eliciting a large roar from a group of 15 bystanders.

While Barton fired a 294, Abbey shot 302 and Pfeiffer carded a 309. Mount Olive, who was done playing two hours before the Bulldogs, battled back from a 311 the first day to post the best score of the day: 293. Top-seeded Coker shot a 297.

Barton, ranked 29th nationally by Golfstat, has a 36-hole total of 587 with Tuesday's final round remaining. Abbey has a 591 and Coker is at 593. Limestone is fourth at 600.

"I was really proud of how well our guys played on the back nine today, especially in the high winds," 12th-year Barton head coach John Hackney said. "Other teams that finished hours ahead of us had near ideal conditions, yet our guys still managed to post some pretty good numbers. We made 10 birdies, which was solid. If we can just hit the ball in the right spots on the greens and avoid three-putts tomorrow, I think we'll have a good shot of claiming the title."

Barton has finished first, second, tied for first and second in its four spring tournaments thus far.

WILSON, NC — Blair Carson's walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a huge rally for Anderson University on Friday, giving the seventh-seeded Trojans a 12-11 victory over No. 3 seed and nationally 26th-ranked Barton College in the winner's bracket of the Conference Carolinas Baseball Tournament.

Anderson (23-28) trailed 11-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning, but scored three runs in each of the final three frames to advance to a 1 p.m. winner's bracket contest on Saturday. Carson's two-run homer, which came off Barton reliever Jimmy Metzinger (2-1), was his team-leading 12th of the season and Anderson's fourth of the game.

Barton men top MOC 5-3 in league tourney

April 17, 2009

SUMTER, SC – Barton College swept the doubles, then picked up a pair of victories in singles on Friday to claim a 5-3 conquest of Mount Olive in the quarterfinals of the Conference Carolinas Men's Tennis Tournament.

The fifth-seeded Bulldogs of first-year head coach Tom Schrecengost  improved to 8-9 with the victory and will play top-seeded Lees-McRae at 9 a.m. Saturday for the right to play for the 2009 championship.

Barton battled its way to three doubles victories on Friday against the fourth-seeded Trojans. Cesar Grobel-Chris Martel won 8-6 at No. 1 doubles, Leandro Peron/Pier-Alexandre Desilets prevailed 9-8 at No. 2 and Matt Jackman-Diego Salinas won 8-5 at No. 3. Martel, Salinas and Peron were defeated at Nos. 3, 5 and 6 singles, but Grobel won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 and Jackman rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2 to seal the win.

Martel lost 6-3, 6-1; Salinas was beaten 6-1, 6-1; and Peron fell 6-2, 6-4.

"Winning those three doubles matches was the reverse of what happened a week ago, when we lost 5-4 to Mount Olive," Schrecengost said. "We just wanted to win at least one of those, so winning all three was big. But, to their (Trojans) credit, they battled back. It was just a good team win for us. I've been coaching tennis a long time, and there haven't been many matches when I've been prouder."

The Trojans pulled within 4-3 by winning three of the first four singles matches to come off the court, but Jackman's rally sealed the deal.

"He beat that guy easily last week," Schrecengost said, "but today was a different story. Matt just seems to love to play three-setters. One thing about him is that he is never going to give up. He's a competitor and he's smart, so he knows how to work his way back into it."

Saturday morning's other semifinal will pit No. 2 seed Anderson vs. No. 3 Limestone. In other matches Friday, Lees-McRae beat Queens, Anderson topped Erskine and Limestone beat Pfeiffer — all by 5-1 counts.

"We've got our hands full with Lees-McRae tomorrow," Schrecengost said of the nationally 20th-ranked Bobcats. "They didn't lose a conference match this season (beat Barton 7-2). But today was a pressure match for us and we pulled through, so there's no reason we can't give them a battle."
