Mount Olive men cruise past BC runners

August 28, 2009

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Kerry "Bear" Maloney finished first out of 23 runners and Mount Olive had the top five finishers as the Trojans defeated Barton in a men's cross country dual meet Friday at Mount Olive College.

The event marked the first-ever intercollegiate cross country event to take place on the MOC campus. Mount Olive totaled the minimum 15 points, while Barton finished with 46 points. Points are based on where each team's top five finishers placed.

Maloney ran the 5k course in a time of 16:27, while Paul Hoffman finished second with a time of 16:48. Both Maloney and Hoffman transferred from Keystone College (Pa.), where they ran for current Trojan head coach Matt van Lierop.

"It feels good to get the season off to this kind of a start," said Maloney, a sophomore from Scranton, Pa. "It helped a lot having people cheering us on. It was a good crowd."

Kevin Ryan finished third with a time of 17:23, four seconds ahead of Ronnie Sturgill, who finished fourth. Reshaad Nelson placed fifth with a time of 17:38.

Sammy Serem was Barton's top finisher in 6th place with a time of 17:53. Chris Free was eighth for the Bulldogs with a time of 18:29. Barton head coach Sheryl Neff said Serem lost some time on the course when he took a wrong turn.

Friday's individual times won't count towards the Conference Carolinas rankings since the official distance for men's races is 8k. But Hoffman says Friday's race will help ease into the 8k races.

"This was a good start. It gets our confidence up," said Hoffman, a sophomore from Lakeview, N.Y. "Running a 5k gives you a good idea where your 8k time should be."

First-year Mount Olive College President Dr. Philip Kerstetter fired the starting gun for both the men's and women's races.

Friday's dual meet was the first of two cross country events to take place on the Mount Olive College campus. The Trojans play host to the Mount Olive Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational October 9. The field is expected to include a number of Conference Carolinas teams.

Barton women clipped by Mount Olive

August 28, 2009

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. - Melissa Moore finished first out of 19 runners and Mount Olive had three of the top four finishers as the Trojans defeated Barton in a women's cross country dual meet Friday at Mount Olive College. The event marked the first-ever intercollegiate cross country event to take place on the MOC campus.

Mount Olive totaled 25 points, while Barton finished with 30 points. Points are based on where each team's top five finishers placed.

Moore ran the 5k course in a time of 21:24 to win by 45 seconds. Roccio Alvarado finished third with a time of 23:10, followed by Nikolette Lucas at 23:26. Caitlyn Pie finished eighth (25:24) and Megan Jones placed ninth (25:38) to complete Mount Olive's scoring.

Alexa Tovella of Barton finished second with a time of 22:05. The Bulldogs captured the fifth, sixth and seventh-place spots with Saybah Reed, Brittany Cowan and Chrissy Bofill, while Sandy Dickerson finished 10th.

First-year Mount Olive College President Dr. Philip Kerstetter fired the starting gun and the race started under a steady rain. The rain ended midway through the race, but cooled temperatures to the upper 70's.

Both Moore and Alvarado were excited to race on campus and in front of a home crowd.

"It was nice having people cheering us on as we ran," said Moore, a junior from Willard, N.C. "One team (women's soccer) even stopped practice to root us on. It makes you work harder."

"People walking on campus would stop and cheer us on," said Alvarado, a sophomore from Faison, N.C. "I enjoyed seeing a crowd. It really encourages you."

Friday's dual meet was the first of two cross country events to take place on the Mount Olive College campus. The Trojans play host to the Mount Olive Men's and Women's Cross Country Invitational October 9. The field is expected to include a number of Conference Carolinas teams.

"We had a couple of them who ran pretty well," Barton head coach Sheryl Neff said. "I could tell they were really nervous."

Neff also said that her top runners in both the men's and women's races lost some time when they got confused about course markings and directions.

Mount Olive is off until September 12 when the Trojans travel to Wingate, N.C., to compete in the Wingate University Invitational.

Tom Morris selected for N.C. Tennis Hall of Fame

August 28, 2009

GREENSBORO, NC - Former Atlantic Christian College/Barton College tennis great Tom Morris, who later led the Bulldogs to great success as a coach, will be inducted into the North Carolina Tennis Foundation Hall of Fame.

Morris, of Blount's Creek, and Tom Willson of Cashiers, will be officially inducted into the Hall of Fame January 30th, 2010, with a commemoration event held at the Carolina Hotel in Pinehurst, NC. The North Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame is housed in Greensboro, N.C.

Tom Morris came to North Carolina by way of Columbia, S.C. He enjoyed a sensational prep tennis career, during which he suffered just one loss. As an undergraduate at Atlantic Christian College (now Barton), Morris played in the No. 1 spot all four years, earned All-America recognition twice and helped his team win the 1979 NAIA National Championship. He reached the semifinals in the National Singles Championship his sophomore year and ranked as high as #5 nationally in doubles.

His 105 career singles victories still rank as the school record. Morris was named Kiwanis Male Athlete-of-the-Year at Atlantic Christian three-straight years, making him the only athlete to earn that honor more than twice. Morris would return to his alma mater years later as its Head Coach from 1990-98, molding eight All-America selections and eight conference players-of-the-year. He was inducted into the Barton College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.

Currently, Morris is entering his 12th season as head coach at East Carolina. He is the university's all-time winningest tennis coach and has compiled a record of 232-168 at the institution, complementing his 407-270 career collegiate mark.

During his collegiate coaching career, he has been named the Carolinas Conference Coach-of-the-Year four times, as well as awarded the NAIA District 26 Coach-of-the-Year, the Conference USA Sportsmanship Award and NCAA Men's East Regional Coach-of-the-Year. He and wife, Carol, have three children, Chris, Jack and Al.

Lenoir-Rhyne stops Lady Bulldogs 5-0

August 27, 2009

WILSON, NC — Visiting Lenoir-Rhyne College erupted for five goals in the second half Thursday afternoon en route to a 5-0 shutout of Barton in season-opening women's soccer action.

The Bears rode a hat trick (three goals) from senior Shannon Agnew to victory. Freshman Elizabeth Hawes broke the scoreless tie nearly two minutes into the second half when she chipped the ball over Barton freshman keeper Angelina Lovette from amid a pack of players.

Agnew followed with goals in the 66th, 68th and 76th minutes. Chermaine MacLachlainn served the ball to the middle for the first goal and Agnew scored from 20 yards. Mariel Mena sent a ball forward that Agnew chipped in from 18 yards for a 3-0 cushion. Agnew's final goal was a flick off the outside of her left foot from 10 yards out off a pass from Hawes.

The Bears' final goal was headed in by junior Rebecca Lin off a 35-yard pass from Kaelia Frazier.

Lenoir-Rhyne had a 17-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 9-0 margin in corner kicks. Lovette made some brilliant saves (12 total) in her collegiate debut. Katelyn Burwell played most of the match in goal for LRC while Caitlin Scruggs tended net the final 10 minutes.

BC volleyball team picked 9th by coaches

August 26, 2009

HIGH POINT, NC — Pfeiffer University's women's volleyball team has been selected as the league favorite by Conference Carolinas head coaches for the 2009 season.

The Lady Falcons set a new school record with 27 wins last year, surpassing the old mark of 20 wins in 2007. Overall, Pfeiffer racked up a 27-6 record with an impressive 18-2 mark in conference play to claim the regular season championship title.

Despite losing Petra Ljubicic, last year's top offensive producer, the Lady Falcons will count on the senior leadership of Brittany Dickens and Victoria Parrish, hoping to guide a young Pfeiffer squad into the NCAA DII postseason. Both Dickens and Parrish played in all 33 matches and 130 games last season. Dickens gained honors as a first-team all-conference selection a year ago, finishing second on the team with 344 kills which ranked her in the top 20 of NCAA DII.

Last year's conference coach of the year Ben Guiliano returns for his fifth season at the helm to guide the Lady Falcons. Like most league schools, Coach Guiliano and the Lady Falcons open up their season during the August 28-29 weekend.

The Limestone College women's volleyball team is gearing up for another successful season and hopes to build on its success in the last few seasons. Limestone has posted a winning overall record every year since 2005, and has had a winning conference record since 2006. In 2008, Limestone finished third in the league's regular season standings with a 15-5 record, and boasted an impressive 19-13 overall record.

Limestone's fall lineup features the conference's 2008 Player of the Year, middle hitter Melissa Thomas. Other key returners include seniors Chelsea Anthony and Brooke England, who will see playing time as defensive specialists and liberos. Key newcomers for the Lady Saints include senior middle and outside hitter Tierney Burdett, junior middle hitter Sam Johnson, and sophomore outside hitter Kassi Boedeker.

The Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team comes in at the No. 3 spot in this year's coaches' poll. The Lady Bobcats are looking to return to the form that won ten conference championships in 11 years. Last season the team suffered an early exit from the tournament in a second round loss to Mount Olive. They also finished fourth in the regular season with a 14-6 league and 17-15 overall record.

"I am excited for this year," Head Coach Jamie Petrik said. "We have a solid group of senior leaders, and we are going to have battle inside the practice gym in the preseason for playing time. My hope is that the intensity will transfer onto the court for the season."

Rounding out the poll 4-11 was: Anderson & Mount Olive (tied), Queens, St. Andrews & Belmont Abbey (tied), Barton, Converse, Erskine and Coker respectively.

Harrison misses cut at U.S. Amateur

August 25, 2009

TULSA, OK — Barton College senior Stephen Harrison (Wilson, NC) was looking good in his bid to secure one of the final 64 match-play spots following a scintillating 1-under 34 on the front nine Tuesday in the second round of the United States Amateur Golf Championship.

Harrison started the final nine holes of the 36-hole stroke play at 3-over through 27 holes, but a back-nine 43 at Cedar Ridge Country Club ended his chances. After recording birdies at Nos. 2 and 4 to start the round, he bogeyed No. 7. Three straight bogeys on Nos. 10, 11 and 12 were followed by a disastrous triple bogey on the 235-yard, par-3 13th. He also doubled the 209-yard 15th before finishing with three straight pars for a 77.

His two-day total of 151 (he shot 74 at Southern Hills on Monday), left him three shots behind the match-play cut line of +8.

John  Tyler Griffin, also of Wilson and a redshirt junior at Georgia Tech, shot 78 at Southern Hills Tuesday and missed the cut as well with a two-day total of 149 (+9). Griffin was making his fourth straight appearance in the U.S. Amateur while Harrison is the first Barton golfer to play in the event while currently enrolled. Griffin finished tied for 88th while Harrison tied for 122nd. Some 7,000 golfers began their U.S. Amateur bid at 99 sites around the country in early August.

Tim Jackson, the 50-year-old from Germantown, TN, was the stroke play medalist at 68-72–140 (even par). He gained notoriety earlier this summer when he led the U.S. Senior Open through 36 holes.

None of the 312 players who made it to Tulsa broke par for 36 holes on the two long, tough layouts. Southern Hills played at nearly 7,100 yards while Cedar Ridge was just under 7,400.

"I know Stephen is disappointed since he had the field of 64 in his sights," Barton head coach John Hackney said, "but he has had an outstanding summer, and we are looking for great things from him at Barton during his senior season."

Barton women's soccer picked 5th in league poll

August 25, 2009

High Point, NC — The Queens University of Charlotte women's soccer team has been picked as the preseason favorite by Conference Carolinas league head coaches for the upcoming season. For the first time in Head Coach Katie Talbert's four year tenure at Queens, the Royals have been selected for this top preseason honor.Queens, who finished the 2008 regular season as Conference Carolinas Co-Champions, looks to defend the title and continue the tradition of great women's soccer.

Talbert, who is very excited and honored to be selected as No. 1, sees the season as one with no ceiling.

"I am very excited to get the regular season started," said Talbert. "The student-athletes this year, and in seasons past, have worked hard to establish a tradition of excellence. The players are ready to uphold that tradition, uphold the high standards we have set for ourselves and also the high standards others have set for us."

The Royals know the season will be a challenging one, but with the help of new players and the experience the returning players bring to the pitch, Queens is ready to tackle the challenge head on.

Pfeiffer University women's soccer team comes in at No. 2 in this year's preseason poll as voted on by league head coaches. The Lady Falcons finished third in regular season play compiling a 14-9 overall and 8-3 conference record, before defeating Erskine and top-seeds Queens and Belmont Abbey to claim the 2008 Conference Carolinas tournament championship. Bartsch, one of five seniors looking to lead the Lady Falcons to another banner year in ‘09, led last season's squad with 14 goals. The goalkeeping tandem of Jamie Alcala and Suzie Hinman also return to anchor the Lady Falcons defense.

Belmont Abbey is third in this year's poll after a run of three straight years in the No. 1 preseason spot. The team is coming off of a great 2008 campaign compiling a 17-3-3 overall, 10-0-1 league record, and a share of the Conference Carolinas regular season title.

The Crusaders, under first year head coach Robert Lane, will return their top seven scorers from last year's outfit that also advanced to the Conference Carolinas championship match for the fourth-straight season. The Abbey enters the year unbeaten in 39 of its last 40 matches against league opponents. Returning is the reigning Conference Player of the Year Celene Molera and Freshman of the Year Connie Axiotis. Molera led the league with 14 goals, while Axiotis tallied eight.

BC Men's XC picked 11th in league poll

August 25, 2009

High Point, NC — After taking the conference title two years ago, Queens University of Charlotte looks to return to the top of the Conference Carolinas podium for 2009. The Royals have been selected to the No. 1 spot in this year's Men's Cross Country preseason poll as voted on by league head coaches.

The Royals sat out the 2008 conference tournament but dominated the NCAA Southeast Region meet and finished seventh at the NCAA National Championships. The Royals will be led by junior Michael Crouch who took the bronze at the NCAA meet before winning NCAA 5,000- and 1500-meter national titles in the spring. Returning for Queens will be individual region champion Oscar Ogwaro and All-Region runners Futsum Mebrahtu and Matt Rowell. Adding depth for the Royals will be newcomers Edgar Santoyo, Simon Stuetzel, Alex Schilling and Nelson Mwangi."We hope to continue our progression this year," said Coach Scott Simmons, "and with added depth we should be more competitive at the conference, regional and national levels. Across the board on this team, we are seeing solid development from good consistent work."

The Lees-McRae College men's cross country team brings back their top seven runners and looks excited for what the 2009 season will bring. Reigning Freshman of the Year Craig Simpkins, and All-Conference performers Nathan Trimble and Chris Holstein will lead the way for the experienced Bobcat squad. Michael Davis and Jordan Gillespie are also expected to make a significant impact with Sondre Thorbergsen joining the team to add more quality depth for the Bobcats.

New to the Bobcats this year will be Head Coach Thomas Cason. After a brief retirement from coaching he returns with a passion to help continue the tradition of the Lees-McRae College Cross Country program.

"I am thrilled to see what this team can do, with the talent, hard work, dedication, and commitment; to go along with Coach Cason's guidance, this group can attain a lot of goals this fall," Lees-McRae College Athletic Director and assistant coach Craig McPhail said.

St. Andrews Presbyterian College is the defending Conference Carolinas men's cross country champions and will be looking for a large group of veteran runners to fill the vacancy left by two-time Conference Carolinas Runner of the Year, Mitch Cooper, who graduated in May.

The Knights have a veteran team that will consist of seven harriers that are either in their junior or senior campaign. Junior Doug Holt, a two-time All-Conference honoree, will look to pace the Knights scoring five runners. The experience from a cluster of letter winners, along with this year's freshman class, should give St. Andrews the opportunity to be competitive both in league and in the Southeast Region.

"It definitely will be a competitive season, but these guys have put in a lot of miles this summer, building up their base and I feel confident that they will be up for the challenge," said reigning Conference Carolinas Coach of the Year, Jim Walters, who enters his second season at the helm of the St. Andrews cross country program.

Erskine finished fourth in the poll with Anderson fifth followed by Limestone, Coker, Mount Olive, Pfeiffer, Belmont Abbey, and Barton respectively rounding-out the poll standings.

Barton picked 11th in XC preseason league poll

August 25, 2009

High Point, NC — The Lees-McRae College women's cross country team looks to repeat as Conference Carolinas Champions, Southeast Region Champions and earn a bid to the NCAA National Meet in 2009. The Lady Bobcats have great expectations this fall after being tapped the favorites in the 2009 Women's Cross Country preseason coaches' poll.

For the Lady Bobcats to continue their success, it will ride on the shoulders of their seniors. The Lady Bobcat seniors Ashley May, April Harris, Dana Lindholm, Gina Valenti, Kira Shomaker and Carla Swart have finished in the top two of the conference in their three previous years and won the NCAA Southeast Region in the past two years. Newcomers are transfer Hannah Henderson, freshmen Lindsey Bush and Cinthi Lehner who will look to add the program's ninth conference title in 12 years.

"Coach Cason and I hope to give these seniors a year to remember and introduce our newcomers to the tradition we have created here in Banner Elk," Assistant Coach and Athletic Director Craig McPhail said.

Anderson University head cross country coach Randy Greer will be looking for a mix of veterans and gifted newcomers to help lead the way in 2009 as the Lady Trojans claim the second spot in the league preseason poll.

"Our team is going to have talent but we are going to be young," Greer said. "We have to get everyone in and see what they are capable of doing. We certainly have the talent to compete and there is a possibility that we could finish higher than we did last year, depending on the newcomers."

Whitney Bishoff returns to Anderson as the defending conference individual champion. With the title, Bishoff claimed both the Runner of the Year and Freshman of the Year awards in 2008. Her victory marked the fifth straight year that Anderson won the women's individual conference title. Bishoff went on to finish third in the NCAA Southeast Regional and recorded AU's best-ever finish (68th) at the NCAA Division II national meet.

Greer also will be looking for sophomore Kathryn Laird, juniors Chelsea Rogers and Lynne Flint and his freshmen to contribute immediately, "We have several freshmen coming in that are solid runners," he noted.

Converse College comes back this year aiming for a championship after a second place finish at the conference meet in 2008. Despite the loss of seniors Carrie Powell and Betsy Ruppert who finished 9th and 12th respectively in 2008, the Valkyries will spear into the season led by returning sophomores Brittany Hogue, Samantha Nicholson, and senior Carrie Jackson. Additionally, Converse has added two freshmen talents in Amy Bassett and Elizabeth High who bring new speed and power to the Valkyries' arsenal.

"I've never seen a team of talented young ladies work so closely together through every mile and every turn. The camaraderie and encouragement paired with the team's mature hard work ethic should carry us far this year," said head cross country coach Mike Coggins. "We've put together a good schedule and I'm excited to see if we can use our early meets to fine tune our racing and find a way to stay sharp throughout the season," said Coggins.

Queens finished fourth in the poll with St. Andrews fifth followed by Limestone, Pfeiffer, Coker, Erskine Mount Olive, Barton, and Belmont Abbey, respectively, rounding out the poll.

Harrison shoots 74, tied for 62nd at U.S. Am

August 24, 2009

TULSA, OK — Barton College senior Stephen Harrison (Wilson, NC) got off to a solid start on Monday in the first round of stroke play in the United States Amateur Golf Championship at Southern Hills Country Club.

Harrison, who began his round on No. 10, carded an even-par 35 on holes 10-18, then shot 4-over 39 on the front nine for a round of 4-over 74. He is in a massive 25-way tie for 62nd place in a field of 312 golfers. Half the field played Southern Hills (site of four PGA Championships and three U.S. Opens) on Monday while the other half played nearby Cedar Ridge.

Harrison's round included two birdies and six bogeys. He hit 11 greens and only 3-putted one time on the slick surfaces, but said any time he missed a fairway, it was hard to hit the sloping greens.

"I didn't feel like I played that bad, but it's just a ridiculously hard golf course," Harrison said. "I hit my irons well and, when I missed a fairway, it was just barely, but then it was hard to get to the green. I had a 20-foot birdie putt on my first hole, then I had 10 feet left for par, but I made it."

Wilson's John Tyler Griffin, a redshirt junior at Georgia Tech, fired a 1-over round of 71 at Cedar Ridge and is tied for 12th place. The top 64 golfers after Tuesday's 18 holes will advance to match play, which begins on Wednesday at Southern Hills.

The field, which began with more than 7,000 players at 99 sites, includes many of the country's top collegians. Tim Jackson of Germantown, TN, leads with a 2-under 68 at Southern Hills. Jackson, 50, led the 2009 U.S. Open after 36 holes. Only four other players broke par amid the 312 players, and each of them shot 1-under at Cedar Ridge.

Harrison likes his chances of advancing. His game plan is to keep hitting fairways and make sure he keeps his approach shots below the hole, "so I can be aggressive with my putts."

Harrison had the 17th-best score at Southern Hills on Monday. Of the top 61 players, 44 played at Cedar Ridge.

"If I can shoot even par tomorrow (Tuesday), I think I've got a good shot," Harrison said.
