Bulldogs end league drought with 2-0 win

September 26, 2009

WILSON, NC — Freshman Lloyd O"Neill (Fareham, England) and sophomore Paxton Barnes (Wilson, NC) tallied goals Saturday night in the rain as the Barton College men's soccer team ended a 14-game skid in Conference Carolinas play with a 2-0 shutout of visiting Erskine.

The Bulldogs of third-year head coach Matt Akins had not won a league match since beating Coker on Oct. 10, 2007, so smiles were abundant as they saluted the Fall Family Weekend crowd after their victory. Barton raised its record to 3-6 overall and 1-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Erskine fell to 1-6-2 overall and 0-3-1 in the league. Barton travels to Lees-McRae and Erskine is home with Limestone in 7 p.m. clashes this Wednesday.

O'Neill notched his team-best fourth goal at the 4:30 mark. Senior Chris Tripp (Wilson, NC) made a long throw-in that senior Heinz Guttenberger (Winterville, NC) headed to O'Neill, who finished off the play for a 1-0 cushion.

The teams slogged through the rain for more than 70 more minutes before Barnes made it 2-0 in the 76th minute. Tripp served the ball to O'Neill, who beat his defender just left of the goal and centered it to Barnes for a point-blank shot. Tripp and Guttenberger now share the team lead in assists with three apiece.

Each team finished with four shots on goal. Sophomore Brian Riesenberg (Fort Thomas, KY) recorded three saves for the Bulldogs and Devon Braykovich (Roswell, GA) had two saves for the Flying Fleet.

Harpe's goal came off a centering pass from freshman Kimrey Angotti-Smith (Goose Creek, SC) five minutes, 35 seconds into the second 10-minute overtime. Harpe corraled the pass and ripped a left-footed shot just inside the right post — and past diving Barton keeper Angelina Lovette (Lillington, NC).

Barton falls in thriller with Lees-McRae

September 26, 2009

WILSON, NC — The Barton College women's volleyball team gave a Fall Family Weekend crowd of some 300 fans a match to remember on Saturday afternoon. With perennial Conference Carolinas power Lees-McRae in town, the Lady Bulldogs put up a valiant fight with the visiting Bobcats before losing a 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 36-34 thriller.

The final set had the fans on their feet, the coaches disputing calls, referees calling for do-overs and excitement galore. Few in the building have ever seen a set last 70 points. There were high-flying kills from both teams, a few service errors and bodies diving all over the court to keep balls in play. In the end, the fans, players and coaches were all exhausted.

Lees-McRae, which had lost a five-set heartbreaker at league-leading Mount Olive on Friday night, improved to 10-4 overall and 5-1 in the league. Barton slipped to 6-10 overall and 3-3 in league play. The Lady Bulldogs play at Elizabeth City State at 6 p.m. Monday and visit Coker at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

"Barton really stepped up to the plate today and showed a lot of character," Lees-McRae head coach Jamie Petrik said. "In many critical situations, they put the ball down and we didn't. However, we did come through in the end. Any time a game goes into the 30s, it's just a flip of the coin as to who will win."

Both Petrik and Barton head coach Patrick Morgan commisserated over substitutes. Both had used up all their available substitutions in game four by the time the score reached 24-24.

"Both teams ran out of subs, which made it very interesting," Petrik said. "We had two 5-foot-5 setters in the front row for more than two rotations. In fact, we had three setters in there during that stretch, which probably helped us because there were a lot of freaky plays."

"I think our girls did a good job of keeping everything on an even keel and staying focused today," Morgan said. "You don't want to give away your opportunities to win when you have them (like in game two), but I thought our girls regrouped well. We played hard in game four."

However, he said the Lady Bulldogs "were not satisfied" with getting close.

"It doesn't prove anything until you win," he said. "It just proves that we have to work hard to finish out (games). We are moving in the right direction. Our work ethic on the court is better and our mental toughness is coming through more."

Barton fell behind in the fourth set, but rallied to a 17-14 lead. LMC tied it at 19-19, then the seesaw affair continued for 32 more points. Freshman Kati Wood (Pasadena, MD), junior Meagan Parrott (Oxford, NC) and junior Mel Ritter (Wescosville, PA) accounted for eight kills for Barton after the game went into extra time. For the Bobcats, Megan Epperson (St. John, IN), Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, NC) and Whitney Justice (Franklin, TN) had some big kills down the stretch.

Barton had set point five times, but Lees-McRae came up with the big play each time. The Lady Bulldogs were also hurt by two service errors late in the set.

Ritter paced the Lady Bulldogs with 17 kills, 13 digs, two solo blocks and two block assists. Parrott tallied 12 kills and seven digs; Wood had 11 kills and three digs; junior setter Carly Cash (Oxford, NC) had 30 assists; junior libero Cassie Blackmon (Henderson, NC) notched 21 digs; and junior middle hitter Chancey Sebranek totaled five kills, five block assists, four digs and one ace.

For the Bobcats, Justice finished with 15 kills, one solo block and five block assists. Clendenin logged 14 kills and three block assists and Epperson had 15 kills. Freshman setter Megan Mitchell (Minden, NV) notched 37 assists and two aces in three games while freshmen libero Luana Rocha (Brazil) recorded 21 digs and five aces.

Lady Bulldogs top Belmont Abbey in four

September 25, 2009

WILSON, NC — Junior outside hitter Mel Ritter simply took over for the Barton College volleyball team in the fourth set of their Conference Carolinas matchup with visiting Belmont Abbey on Friday night.

With Barton up 2-1, but trailing 18-20 in the fourth set, fourth-year Barton head coach Patrick Morgan called timeout to rally his troops. The message must have been clear, because Ritter (Wescosville, PA) proceeded to hammer kill after kill, which revved up the crowd of some 250 fans. In that last impressive spree, Ritter pounded six of her match-high 26 kills as the Lady Bulldogs rallied to a 25-23 win.

The 25-27, 25-20, 25-18, 25-23 victory vaulted Barton to 6-9 overall and 3-2 in the league. Abbey slipped to 2-8 overall and 2-3 in Conference Carolinas. Barton is home with Lees-McRae College (9-4, 4-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday as part of Family Weekend.

"We played well and I was happy to come away with the win," Morgan said. "Between the first and second games I told the girls that we needed to serve more aggressively. They took it heart and were able to execute better. Mel had a phenomenal night, which was kind of obvious. It was also nice that Kati Wood (Pasadena, MD) had such an efficient night (12 kills on 15 attempts with no errors for an .800 hitting percentage) as well.

"Anything can happen in game 5 since its so short (play to 15). Having to come back tomorrow and play Lees-McRae, we just needed to finish that fourth game and get out of the gym, so I'm glad we did."

Barton got solid contributions from some other players as well. Junior Macon Harmon (Durham, NC) had 27 assists and nine digs; junior Carly Cash (Oxford, NC) had 18 assists and 14 digs; junior middle hitter Chancey Sebranek (Garden City, KS) had two kills and six blocks; and junior Cassie Blackmon (Henderson, NC) made 26 digs.

Sophomore middle hitter Stefanie Holler (Wake Forest, NC) powered the Crusaders' attack with 12 kills and six assists. Freshman setter Kay Schellenberg (Jacksonville, FL) dished off 31 assists.

Lady Bulldogs stop Virginia Union in four

September 22, 2009

WILSON, N.C. — The Barton College volleyball team earned a season sweep of its two-match series with Virginia Union on Tuesday night with a 3-1 win in Wilson Gymnasium.

The Lady Bulldogs improved to 5-9 overall with the 25-5, 24-26, 25-15, 25-13 non-conference victory and will return to Conference Carolinas play with home matches against Belmont Abbey at 7 p.m. Friday and Lees-McRae at 2 p.m. Saturday. Virginia Union exited with a 4-10 ledger.

Sophomore setter Cami Fledderman (Batesville, IN) ran the show for Barton with 20 assists, six digs and five aces while junior Macon Harmon (Durham, NC) added 14 assists and three aces. At the net, the junior trio of Mel Ritter (Wescosville, PA), Meagan Parrott (Oxford, NC) and Chancey Sebranek (Garden City, KS) recorded 13, 9 and 8 kills, respectively. Sebranek also tallied three aces.

Defensively, junior Kristin Peschock (Statesville, NC) notched seven digs and Parrott contributed six.

The Panthers, who have lost seven straight, got four digs and two blocks apiece from junior Lashira Williams (Cleveland, OH) and freshman Camille Smith (Anderson, SC). Freshman Brittanee Adams (Moreno Valley, CA) recorded 11 assists and Williams added five digs.

"I wasn't entirely happy with our level of play, but in the end, we did what we had to do to secure the victory," fourth-year Barton head coach Patrick Morgan said. "I was happy to see us come out and play so well in game one. Cami gave us a big spark with a run of aces and Chancey had five kills in five attempts, which really helped us build momentum.

"However, the personnel we utilized in game two should have been able to do a better job of executing basic plays. With Virginia Union being so athletic, we gave them too many opportunities to score points, and they took advantage of that to win game two. In the last two games, when Mel and Meagan came back in, they took control and everyone else settled down and played well to finish off the match."

BC's Mendoza wins ITA "B" Flight title!

September 22, 2009

SUMTER, S.C. — Barton College newcomer Roman Mendoza of France had a sensational debut this weekend in the ITA Tennis Championships at the Palmetto Tennis Center.

Mendoza, a junior transfer from Barton Community College (KS) won the Men's B Flight of the ITA tennis tournament at Francis Marion which concluded Sunday. Mendoza — who defeated Bruno Prudence of Wingate (6-2,6-0), Wu Ferraz of Augusta State (6-0,6-0), Braeden Patchell (6-0,6-1), Jan Labas of Augusta State and Drew Owen of Wingate — only lost a total of four games en route to the final.

"We just got Roman cleared (by the NCAA Eligibility Center) earlier in the week," Barton head coach Tom Schrecengost said, "so frankly, I didn't know how good he was — or how good he could be. I put him in the B draw, knowing with the amount of tennis he has played (in his lifetime) that he would be a good player.

"He had a great tournament, and he won quite easily. He just has the kind of game that gives people trouble. He is very clever and has all the shots with different spins. He also mixes it up well. He hit deep shots, lobs and came to the net, which kept them off balance, and he doesn't make many mistakes. We will be much better with him in the lineup. We should have a top four that can compete with most anybody."

On the women's side, Barton junior Jamie Galasso (transfer N.C. Wesleyan) advanced to the round of 16 in the B draw before falling. She defeated Maddy Billeter of Pfeiffer 6-3, 6-4 in the round of 64 and Melanie Scheider in the round of 32, 6-1, 6-3 but was taken down 6-1, 6-3 by Sam Alschlager of Wingate in two close sets in the round of 16.

Also winning matches for the Bulldogs in the four day event were junior Cesar Grobel, junior Leandro Peron, sophomore P.A. Desilets, junior Eduardo Stefani, sophomore Lindsay Toth and senior Blair Burke.

Bulldog men fall just short at SAPC

September 21, 2009

LAURINBURG, N.C.-St. Andrews Presbyterian College jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead that was capped by a pair of goals by freshman Daniel Montero (Raleigh, N.C.), and then held off a surging Barton College in the second half for a 3-2 Conference Carolinas victory on Monday afternoon.

The Knights snapped a three game skid improving to 3-4-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the league. The Bulldogs have lost two league showdowns in three days, dipping to 2-6-0 on the season and 0-2-0 in the conference.

Montero finished with a five-point performance adding an assist on the Knights first goal. Montero recorded his first collegiate goals and assist in the victory.

St. Andrews jumped out to the three-goal lead by putting 6-of-8 shots on goal in the first half while limiting Barton to just four total shots in the first 45 minutes.

Freshman Micah Uehara (Kapolei, Hawaii) scored the Knights opening goal in the 15th minute. Montero started the play by taking a hard shot from close range that was saved but the rebound went directly to the top of the box where Uehara placed a curling kick into the back of the net.

Montero doubled up the Knights advantage four minutes later, placing a precise shot past the Bulldogs goalkeeper on a breakaway that was set up on a long pass by junior Brian Humphrey (Jacksonville, N.C.). Montero struck again in the 35th minute to increase the lead to three goals, which proved to be the game-winning goal.

Uehara, who leads St. Andrews with six points on the season, was credited with an assist on Montero's second goal. Montero was close to having a hat trick but he had a first-half goal waived off due to an offsides call.

Barton kept fighting and made the last 20 minutes very interesting with a pair of goals in a two minute and 16 second outburst. Sophomore Paxton Barnes (Wilson, N.C.) ended the shutout bid in the 70th minute, scoring with a well-placed shot after receiving the ball from senior Heinz Guttenberger (Winterville, N.C.). The Bulldogs then pulled to within one goal on a blast from freshman Lloyd O'Neill (Fareham, England), who smoked a 25-plus yard direct kick just inside the left post.

O'Neill leads Barton with three goals and six points on the season.

Knights' junior goalkeeper William Williams (Denver, Colo.) only needed to make two saves for his third victory of the season.

SAPC finished with a 19-12 shot advantage while Barton claimed an 8-5 corner kick edge.

St. Andrews next travels to Conference Carolinas foe Belmont Abbey College on Saturday at 4 p.m. Barton hosts league rival Erskine College this Saturday during Family Weekend at 7 p.m.
