Barton women beaten by Lander

SALISBURY, NC — Lander got 21 points and 17 rebounds from Shannon McKever (Florence, SC) in a 93-78 win over Barton in women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at the Comfort Suites Classic hosted by Catawba College.

The Lady Bearcats remained undefeated at 3-0, while the Bulldogs dropped to 1-1. Barton plays host Catawba at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Ciara Lyons (Augusta, GA) also had a big game for Lander with 17 points, five rebounds and seven assists. Mukia Myrick (Columbus, GA) added 13 points and eight rebounds, while Kaylyn Small (Augusta, GA) had 11 points and seven boards.

Jamila Johnson (Garner, NC) led Barton with 19 points, while Esty Flores (Virginia Beach, VA) tossed in 17 points. She was 8-for-8 at the line, but made only 4-of-17 from the floor. Destiny Hamlin (Lugoff, SC) also reached double figures with 11 for the Bulldogs.

Lander never trailed and used a 24-8 run early in the first half to grab a 27-11 lead with nine minute to go before the break. Barton struggled with its shooting in the opening half, canning just 21%. The Lady Bearcats went up 37-15 on a three-pointer by Myrick and grabbed a 47-23 advantage at the half.

The Lady Bearcats pushed the lead to 31 at 59-28 on a layup by Lyons three minutes into the second half and held off a late Barton rally. A jumper by Johnson cut the deficit to 73-59 with just under five minutes left and a three-pointer by Johnson cut the lead to 89-78 in the final minute.

Barton shot nearly 44% in the second half, but only 35.5% for the game while Lander hit on just under 44%. The Lady Bearcats also enjoyed a 54-43 edge on the boards.
