BC baseball blanks Wingate 9-0

WINGATE, N.C.–The Barton College Bulldogs defeated Wingate University 9-0 in NCAA Division II baseball action Thursday night at Ron Christopher Stadium and Plyler Athletic Field. Barton improves to 12-8 overall, while Wingate falls to 10-6 overall on the season.

Senior infielder Ryan McCleney (Chadbourn, N.C.) was four-for-four with two RBI and four runs scored for the visiting BC Bulldogs. He also stole three bases on the night. Senior Wesley Francis (Blairs, Va.) was two-for-five with two RBI. Senior infielder Kevin Carty (Southampton, N.J.) added a two-for-four night with two RBI.

Five different Wingate Bulldogs had hits on the night. Sophomore infielder Jacob Karr (Richmond, Va.) and freshman first baseman Brian Yeung (Raleigh, N.C.) each had a double for Wingate.

The visiting Bulldogs got on the board in the first when McCleney scored on a wild pitch. They added two more runs in the second on a pair of RBI singles, the second coming from McCleney with two outs to make it 3-0.

An RBI double from junior infielder Aaron Watkins (Newport News, Va.) made it 4-0 in the fifth. An RBI double from McCleney in the sixth pushed the lead to five. He would score on a double steal later in the inning to make it 6-0.

Sophomore infielder Braxton Lewis (Seven Springs, N.C.) blasted a solo homer in the seventh to make it 7-0. Two more RBI singles in the eighth gave Barton a 9-0 cushion.

Senior right-hander John Anderson (Richlands, N.C.) got the win for Barton. He allowed four hits in seven innings of work, while striking out six to improve to 2-1 overall on the year. Junior left-hander Cale Rogers (Snow Camp, N.C.) took the loss, falling to 0-1 overall on the season. He allowed three earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings of work.

Barton travels to Mount Olive College Saturday for a key Conference Carolinas doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., followed by a single game Sunday afternoon.
